BMCHS is seeking an ICU Senior Nurse Manager to provide strategic and operational leadership for a 38-bed, two-unit ICU in Boston. You will ensure safe, high-quality, patient-centered care and oversee daily operations, workforce leadership, and regulatory readiness with 24-hour accountability.

Reporting to the ACNO, you will drive staffing plans, budget management, interdisciplinary collaboration, and continuous improvement through CQI activities, shaping patient outcomes and employee engagement

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing; MA RN license required.
  • BLS certification.
  • 6+ years RN experience and 3+ years nurse management in inpatient setting.

  • Oversees daily ICU operations to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.
  • Manages workforce, recruitment, onboarding, and staff development.

Job description

The ICU Senior Nurse Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for a 38-bed, two-unit multidisciplinary ICU, ensuring safe, high-quality, patient-centered care and achievement of departmental goals. The role has broad accountability for clinical operations, workforce leadership, quality and regulatory performance, staffing, and resource management, while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and continuous improvement
Reporting to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO), the Senior Nurse Manager independently oversees day-to-day operations and nursing personnel, with 24-hour accountability for the units. The role significantly influences patient outcomes, employee engagement, operational effectiveness, and alignment with organizational priorities.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
  • Operational Leadership and Clinical Oversight : Oversees daily unit operations ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.Coordinates clinical activities and patient flowin collaboration with the charge nurseto meet patient care needs safely and effectively. Identifies operational, staffing, and patient careconcerns proactively and collaborates with leadership and interdisciplinary teams to implementtimelysolutions. Maintains standards of clinical practice consistent with Nursing Division expectations, regulatory requirements, and evidence-based practice. Oversees care delivery processes to optimize patient outcomes, patient flow, and departmental effectiveness. Serves as a senior clinical resource for complex patient care situations, triage concerns, discharges, etc.
  • Workforce Management and Development : Maintains knowledge of labor agreements, personnel policies, and regulatory requirements; partners with Human Resources and Labor Relations teams to address employee issues appropriately.Leads, coaches, and develops staff to foster engagement, accountability, and professional growth. Manages recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and retention initiatives. Partners with nursing education resources to support orientation, competency validation, and ongoing staff development.
  • Quality, Safety, and Performance Improvement : Leads quality, patient safety, and regulatory readiness initiatives within the department (e.g., Joint Commission, OSHA, DPH). Monitors quality, risk, patient experience, and operational metrics to identify improvement opportunities and implement corrective actions. Participates in unit-based CQI activities and committees and assists staff in identifying and monitoring the quality indicators that are most pertinent to patient care goals.
  • Strategic Staffing and Resource Management : Develops staffing plans aligned with patient acuity, volume trends, and operational needs. Monitors productivity and resource utilization to support efficient operations and fiscal responsibility. Partners with ACNO on budget planning and identifies current and future equipment and capital needs.
  • Interdisciplinary and Organizational Collaboration : Partners with physicians, nurse leaders, care management, and interdisciplinary teams to improve care coordination and patient throughput. Represents the Department on committees, task forces, and organizational initiatives. Supports the Medical Center’s mission, values, and Nursing Division goals through active leadership participation.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, 6+ years of relevant clinical RN experience and 3+ years of nurse management experience in an inpatient setting or equivalent combination of education and experience.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Masters Degree in Nursing preferred
  • Previous nurse management experience in ICU preferred
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
  • Current license to practice Nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • BLS certification

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs):
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong skills in patient flow coordination, interdisciplinary collaboration and clinical operations
  • Ability to effectively manage expense budget as allocated.
  • Ability to make formal presentations relative to clinical, operational, educational research and financial issues
  • Ability to problem-solve and work collaboratively towards defined patient care outcomes
Compensation Range:

$118,500.00- $172,000.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness.
