Job summary

Family Service of Rhode Island seeks a Senior Accountant to perform a broad range of accounting and financial operations, partnering with the Finance team and program leadership to ensure accurate reporting and effective stewardship of resources.

The role focuses on month-end close, GL reconciliations, grant accounting support, and budget analysis within a nonprofit context, with opportunities to lead audits and improve processes.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CPA eligibility preferred.
• Experience in nonprofit accounting, financial reporting, and financial management.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and FASB standards and ability to apply in nonprofit environment.
• Experience with automated accounting systems; Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) or similar ERP preferred.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; Word and Outlook required.

Responsibilities

• Support month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries for prepaids, allocations, intercompany transactions, and accruals.
• Maintain general ledger reconciliations and supporting documentation, including occupancy square footage, ROU leases, and fixed assets.
• Reconcile bank, investment, and endowment accounts; research variances and ensure GL accuracy.
• Support pre-award and post-award grant functions, funding trackers, and SEFA.
• Collaborate with Finance and program leadership to analyze financial activity and manage funding sources.
• Assist with annual financial statement audits, other audits, and Form 990 filings.
• Assist in budget preparation, monitoring, and analysis.
• Maintain chart of accounts and GL integrity; ensure internal controls compliance.
• Contribute to process improvements, technology enhancements, and accounting best practices.
• Participate in special projects and cross-training; mentor junior staff.
