Hitachi Rail in Pittsburgh, PA is seeking a Senior Network (Telecoms) Engineer – Work Package Leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment. You will lead telecom design, testing, and deployment across the project, coordinating with cross-functional teams and managing interfaces with signaling, rolling stock, and passenger information systems.

Travel is required up to 25% with focus on the East Coast, and you will budget, staff projects, and ensure delivery on schedule while maintaining quality

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Electronic, or Computer Engineering or IT, or at least 10 years of equivalent experience.
• Railway telecom systems experience is preferred.
• Strong communication and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Plan, execute, monitor and control design, configuration, test and commissioning activities for the telecommunication system.
• Identify, analyze and manage requirements.
• Identify and resolve interfaces within the Telecommunication System (e.g. Signaling, Rolling Stock).
• Integrate telecom systems with focus on wired/wireless networking.
• Prepare Conceptual, Preliminary, Detailed and Installation Design.
• Participate in product selection.
• Create Bill of Materials and support Purchasing to order equipment.
• Ensure projects are properly staffed and budgets controlled.
• Manage and mitigate risks.

Job description

Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self‑motivated Senior Network (Telecoms) Engineer – Work Package Leader who thrives in a fast‑paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. The position is based in Pittsburgh, PA.

Travel Required

25% – with a focus on the East Coast (primarily Baltimore, MD)

Accountabilities

• Plan, execute, monitor and control design, configuration, test and commissioning activities for the telecommunication system according to the overall program schedule.
• Identify, analyze and manage requirements.
• Identify and resolve interfaces internal and external to the Telecommunication System (e.g. Signaling, Rolling Stock, etc.).
• Integrate medium‑complex telecommunications systems with particular attention to Wired and Wireless Networking technologies.
• Prepare Conceptual, Preliminary, Detailed and Installation Design.
• Participate in product selection.
• Create Bill of Materials and support Purchasing Department to order equipment.
• Make sure assigned project/s are properly staffed to execute activities as planned.
• Keep assigned project/s budget under control.
• Manage and mitigate risks.

Required Skills & Experience

• Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, terminology and trends in communications engineering.
• Working Knowledge of fiber optics, hardware and software related to wired and wireless communications.
• Working knowledge of wireless communications in demanding scenarios.
• Exposure to Passenger Information Systems (onboard and wayside) technologies.
• Working knowledge of planning and scheduling of activities using MS Project, Primavera or other similar tools.
• Prior experience managing small‑medium sized projects and project teams.
• Working knowledge of Test and commissioning processes.
• Skilled in handling electric, electronic, and mechanical drawings and schematics.
• Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills.
• Excellent written and oral communications skills and ability to communicate complex technical information.

Desired Skills & Experience

• Knowledge of telecommunications systems for the railway industry.
• From 2 to 5 years of Railway System Engineering expertise.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Electronic, or Computer Engineering or Information Technology OR at least 10 years of equivalent experience.
