Job summary

NJ TRANSIT is seeking a senior Network Engineering Specialist to lead architecture, engineering, implementation, modernization, and ops for its enterprise network. You will provide hands-on expertise across WAN/LAN, data centers, wireless, cloud connectivity, and security integration.

The role collaborates with Architecture, Operations, Vendors, and project teams to deliver reliable, secure, and highly available services. Strong Cisco, BGP/OSPF, SD-WAN, and automation experience are required.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field, or equivalent experience.
10+ years of enterprise network engineering in large environments.
Expert level knowledge of enterprise routing and switching.
Advanced experience with Cisco routers, Catalyst switches, Nexus platforms.
Advanced knowledge of BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, TCP/IP, VLANs, VRFs, STP, QoS, multicast, VPNs.
Strong WAN and SD-WAN architecture experience.
Experience with carrier telecom services and WAN circuit technologies.
Experience designing highly available and geographically diverse network infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Design, engineer, implement, configure, troubleshoot, and optimize LAN/WAN infrastructure.
Design/support Layer 2 and 3 environments using BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, VLANs, VRFs, HSRP, STP, QoS.
Develop network standards, reference architectures, engineering specifications.
Perform capacity planning, performance analysis, lifecycle management, modernization.
Engineer WAN connectivity using Internet, MPLS, EPL/EVPL, dark fiber.
Troubleshoot WAN performance, latency, loss, jitter, routing, carrier transport.
Support Cisco data center tech including Nexus, ACI.
Support data center consolidation, relocation, migration, modernization.
Engineer high-speed 10G/40G/100G/400G as needed.
Support optical networking, DWDM, dark fiber, data center interconnects.
Design/support network segmentation using VLANs, VRFs, ACLs, firewalls, VPNs.
Participate in Zero Trust, SASE, and modern security architectures.
Support Azure ExpressRoute and AWS Direct Connect connectivity.
Troubleshoot routing, connectivity, performance, security between on-prem and cloud.
Support connectivity for CCTV, building systems, monitoring platforms.
Utilize SolarWinds, ServiceNow, ThousandEyes, packet analysis, and other tools.
Maintain accurate network inventory and CMDB.
Develop automation with Python, Ansible, APIs, Terraform.
Create HLDs/LLDs/MOPs, test plans, rollback procedures, diagrams, docs.
Conduct technical design reviews, identify risks and dependencies.
