Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Principal, to develop students' skills and competence in citizenship and leadership development, maritime heritage, naval operations, seamanship, navigation, and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by extracurricular activities, community service, academic and athletic competitions, drill and orienteering, field meets, flights, visits to naval or other activities, marksmanship training, and physical fitness training.
Essential Functions
- Teach the Naval Science pathway within the Government and Public Administration Cluster, following Lee County School System curriculum standards.
- Promote critical and creative thinking and analysis in all related subject areas.
- Maintain a safe, conducive learning environment for individualized and small‑group instruction.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and translate them into learning experiences, challenging students and utilizing instructional time efficiently.
- Coordinate extracurricular activities, field outreaches, and competitions.
- Instruct students in proper wearing of Navy uniforms and accountability of program equipment.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modify instruction to fit individual needs, including students with special needs.
- Continuously acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, conferences, or research.
- Organize and maintain accurate records of grading, attendance, and student activities as required by LCSS procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourage parental involvement and maintain effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensure student conduct conforms to school standards and establish behavior expectations for a functional learning atmosphere.
- Coordinate with other staff members and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
- Select, requisition, and maintain appropriate resources, ensuring equipment is in good working order.
Additional Duties
Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and central office administrators designated by the Superintendent.
Equipment
Use standard office equipment such as computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, and telephone. Use equipment specific to the CTAE program and Naval Science curriculum.
Travel Requirements
Travel to school system buildings, local and regional professional meetings, curriculum‑related field trips, and competitions as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of current teaching methods, educational pedagogy, and differentiated instruction.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self‑evaluation for professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with colleagues.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Work in standard office and school building environments and in various off‑campus settings associated with the Naval Science Curriculum.
Qualifications Profile
- Certification/License: Current NJROTC Certification as a Naval Science Instructor.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Experience: Retired Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard officers.
- FLSA Status: Exempt.
