Job summary

Zipline is seeking a Senior Motor Development Engineer to drive the next generation of electric motor technologies for our autonomous delivery systems. This hands-on role focuses on turning new motor concepts into repeatable, production-ready processes.

You will collaborate across design, manufacturing, test, controls, and supply chain to develop tooling, equipment, process methods, and documentation for reliable, scalable motors.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
• 5+ years of experience in electromechanical product development or manufacturing.
• Experience from concept through prototype, validation, and production release.
• Strong hands-on mechanical skills with tooling, fixtures, and production hardware.
• Experience with stator winding or coil manufacturing is valuable.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development and industrialization of stator winding and other motor assembly processes from prototypes to production readiness.
• Develop manufacturing methods for wire forming, winding, insertion, termination, impregnation, adhesive application, and related operations.
• Design, prototype, debug, and validate tooling, fixtures, gauges, and production equipment.
• Translate motor design intent into manufacturable process specifications and equipment requirements.
• Plan and execute hands-on experiments and DOE studies to evaluate materials, tooling concepts, and winding methods.
• Build and test prototype motors and stators; analyze defects using root-cause methods.
• Establish process windows and acceptance criteria to support repeatable manufacturing.
• Collaborate with electrical, thermal, controls, test, quality, and operations engineers to resolve DFM issues.
• Manage external suppliers for equipment development and factory acceptance testing.
• Create and maintain manufacturing documentation including PFMEAs, process flows, and validation plans.
