Job summary

Rocket Lab Optical Systems is seeking a Principal Machine Learning Engineer in Long Beach, CA. You will develop deep learning solutions for EO/IR image processing, build end-to-end ML pipelines, and collaborate across AI/vision teams to enable advanced space systems.

You will design, train, and deploy models, work with Python and ML libraries, and ensure robust, scalable software for mission-critical applications. ITAR compliance and security clearances are required for US work.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree plus 12+ years of experience in CS/EE/Physics or related field.
• Strong background in ML including model selection, training, validation, testing, and deployment.
• Experience building deep learning networks for computer vision, image processing, or video analysis.
• Proficiency in Python and familiarity with ML libraries (Keras, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
• Software engineering fundamentals: version control, testing, CI/CD, containerization.

Responsibilities

• Design, train, and deploy ML models for Optical Systems applications.
• Build and maintain ML pipelines for data ingestion, feature engineering, training, and inference.
• Collaborate with researchers/engineers on AI, ML, and computer vision.
• Perform rapid prototyping to integrate solutions into operational systems.
• Troubleshoot, fix bugs, and maintain existing and new systems.
• Stay current with ML research and evaluate new tools and frameworks.
