Job summary

Badger Meter is seeking a Senior Engineer, Machine Learning to own end-to-end ML initiatives for fleet-scale meter data. You will define project scopes, build ML pipelines, and mentor other engineers while collaborating with data scientists and reliability teams to improve product performance and outage detection across millions of meters and IoT devices.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, or Data Analytics, or equivalent practical experience
• 5+ years of related experience in machine learning, data science, or applied analytics; Master’s may count toward portion of experience
• Strong foundation in engineering and statistical fundamentals
• Proficiency in Python and SQL; experience with NoSQL data stores, Elasticsearch, Amazon Redshift, Grafana, and Jupyter Notebooks; additional languages (e.g., C#) a plus
• Experience with version control tools and workflows (e.g., GitHub) for code and model management
• Experience with cloud-based data and machine learning platforms, preferably Amazon Web Services (e.g., S3, SageMaker, Redshift, EC2, ECS, Glue)
• Significant experience with statistics, ML, or mathematical modeling, including predictive modeling, classification, time series data mining, anomaly detection
• Experience modeling performance and detecting anomalies in IoT device/sensor data at scale
• Experience designing, testing, validating, and deploying ML models in production
• Experience with data visualization and BI tools
• Ability to work with non-technical stakeholders to define expectations and success criteria
• Preferred: knowledge of metering, sensors, radios, connectivity products
• Familiarity with Lean Six Sigma or continuous improvement methods

Responsibilities

• Lead ML initiatives; may lead a technical team
• Define scope of ML projects and investigations; contribute to schedules and budgets
• Define and validate model design standards and criteria
• Mentor engineers on data ingestion, cleaning, and model development
• Oversee model performance dashboards and customer-impacting model behavior
• Design, build, and maintain end-to-end ML pipelines from data prep to deployment
• Develop and maintain predictive models, classifiers, AI tools to improve product reliability
• Develop time series data mining and anomaly detection for millions of meters/sensors/devices
• Coordinate field verification studies and remediation efforts
• Interface with AWS cloud for ML workloads (SageMaker, EC2, ECS, Glue)
• Integrate model outputs into dashboards and reporting tools
• Collaborate with engineering/data teams to align outputs with product needs
• Share ML libraries and best practices across teams
