About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Mental Health Nurse at HMP Lewes to join our team. HMP Lewes is a category B male prison located near the centre of Lewes, a five‑minute walk from the town centre. Due to the prison holding remand prisoners, staff work on a rota basis and may be required to work nights, bank holidays and weekends.

Salary: up to £54,397 per annum (depending on experience).

What You'll Be Doing

• Lead a multi‑disciplinary team to deliver a nurse‑led service and prevent hospital admissions.
• Undertake medication rounds and dispense controlled medication.
• Attend emergency response situations.
• Assess patients and undertake reception screening.
• Use an evidence‑based framework to assess patients' health needs and conduct risk assessments.
• Assess physical and mental health of prisoners on admission and throughout custody to inform appropriate referrals.
• Make clinical judgements regarding immediate needs and long‑term treatment plans.

Qualifications

• Registered Nurse – Mental Health.
• Current professional qualification (NMC).
• Evidence of continued professional development.
• Experience of multi‑disciplinary and multi‑agency working.
• Non‑judgmental and compassionate approach.
• Understanding of mental health policy, clinical governance and national standards such as NICE.
• Ability to assess and manage patient risk effectively.
• Experience in a hospital, community, or prison environment is desirable but not essential.
