Job summary

Avera Health seeks a skilled Coder III to accurately assign diagnostic and procedural codes for outpatient charts across facilities. You will focus on complex and high-dollar cases, perform abstracting and other reporting tasks, and mentor junior coders to meet quality and production goals.

You will educate, review, and improve coding processes, and collaborate with HIM, billing, and clinical staff to ensure complete and compliant documentation.

Qualifications

• CCS certification within 180 days (AHIMA).
• RHIA certification within 180 days (AHIMA).
• RHIT certification within 180 days (AHIMA).
• CCS-P certification within 180 days (AHIMA).

Responsibilities

• Review patient documentation to assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes across multiple facilities.
• Determine APC/EAPC and/or applicable outpatient code sets for surgeries, observations, injections, infusions, oncology, and more.
• Master the majority of outpatient types in the service line and code accordingly.
• Serve as subject matter expert for coding topics among health professionals within Avera.
• Query clinicians to ensure complete capture of the medical record and coding assignments.
• Assist staff with denials management, including edits, medical necessity, and related appeals.
• Lead communication between HIM, billing, and providers as needed.
