Senior Mechanical R&D Engineer - Foot and Ankle

As a Senior R&D Engineer - Mechanical on CONMED's Foot & Ankle new product development team, you will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to identify customer needs and design and develop new medical devices, supporting CONMED's Mission – to deliver exceptional outcomes for patients. Your role involves researching customer problems, applying creative thinking and problem solving to generate clinically relevant innovations, and championing these concepts through the entire product development process to launch.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan, conduct, and supervise engineering assignments involving multiple smaller projects or one major project, including project management and scheduling.
- Lead cross-functional execution across R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, and Marketing to ensure on-time project progression from research to commercialization.
- Collaborate with Marketing to conduct research and voice of the customer (VOC) activities to translate, develop, and document design inputs and engineering specifications.
- Research, ideate, innovate, design, develop, acquire prototypes, and refine solutions to complex clinical problems independently.
- Analyze, correct, and mitigate complex product design issues using independent judgment.
- Lead design verification and validation activities, applying industry standards, test strategies, and regulations to ensure safety, efficacy, and compliance.
- Own the creation and refinement of engineering documentation, such as Design History Files, in accordance with the Quality Management System.
- Develop and apply detailed clinical procedural knowledge to benchmark market and competitive offerings, creating and advancing a differentiated customer value proposition.
- Work with cross-functional teams with minimal supervision from an engineer manager or supervisor.
- Conduct root-cause investigations and recommend corrective actions for product design issues.
- Initiate and implement changes in methods, designs, or processes as necessary.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline.
- 8 years of related experience in product development engineering with a bachelor’s degree; 6 years with a master’s degree.
Preferred Requirements:
- Proficiency in Computer Aided Design (CAD), especially SolidWorks.
- Experience in the medical device industry, with expertise in mechanical design within a highly regulated environment, including deep knowledge of medical device usage by clinicians.
- Experience in Orthopedics new product development, including implantables, plating systems, surgical instrumentation, or biologics solutions, preferably within Foot & Ankle.
- Project management experience, with the ability to plan and coordinate project schedules.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of manufacturing methods such as injection molding, screw machining, milling, welding, sterilization, and packaging.
- Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities with enthusiasm.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and demonstrate versatility.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Experience applying GD&T and DFM principles to optimize design for cost.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Project, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Expected travel: 0-20%. Must be willing and able to travel to Memphis, TN as required. This position is not eligible for employer-visa sponsorship.
