Job summary

General Atomics is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for our Herndon, VA location to tackle challenging engineering tasks in space systems and spacecraft hardware. You will analyze, document, and present complex results, often serving as the primary technical contact on small projects. Qualifications include a degree at least bachelor’s level with years of experience in CAD/FEA tools and space systems.

Qualifications

  • Typically requires a bachelor's, master's or PhD in engineering or related discipline with progression: 6+ years with a bachelor's, 4+ with a master's, or 2+ with a PhD
  • Previous experience with satellite space systems is required
  • Experience with CAD/FEA software such as Solidworks, NASTRAN or ANSYS is required
  • Experience in structural analysis of metallic and composite spacecraft structures is highly desirable
  • Experience in hardware spacecraft testing and environmental testing is highly desirable
  • Strong understanding of heat transfer principles and thermal management for space environments
  • Must have ability to develop and communicate new concepts and lead teams on projects
  • US Citizenship is required, with ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Clearance

Responsibilities

  • Independently performs difficult/complex engineering work with general guidance
  • Documents findings and communicates results to engineering staff
  • May represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or single component projects
  • Supports operation of engineering systems and documents problems
  • Devises new approaches to resolve unusual or complex engineering problems
  • Troubleshoots conflicting design/development requirements and material needs
  • Provides direction to design staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professionals
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Adheres to all laws and regulations governing the work
  • Must be able to work extended hours as required
