Job Description: Senior Mechanical Engineer PE
A Senior Mechanical Engineer PE will be responsible for performing, directing, and supervising all aspects of mechanical engineering, including HVAC, hydronic piping, plumbing, and energy studies on multi-discipline building design projects for commercial and government facilities.
General Responsibilities
- Perform all aspects of mechanical engineering design, specifically HVAC engineering, including conceptual studies, program requirements, design analyses, calculations, equipment selection and layout, and system selection and layout.
- Meet with clients to prepare and validate scope of work.
- Oversee and coordinate mechanical engineering projects and the mechanical portion of multi-discipline projects, working with project managers to meet budgets, contracts, goals, and deadlines.
- Coordinate and communicate all aspects of mechanical design within multi-disciplinary teams to ensure proper integration.
- Communicate with contractors on Design-Build projects to verify system suitability.
- Manage and supervise mechanical engineers and designers, ensuring quality control and staff compliance.
- Support the bidding process, including preparing addenda, amendments, and bid tabulations.
- Manage construction phase services, including on-site representation, RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings.
- Coordinate with building commissioning services as needed.
- Work with project teams and respond to directives from project leadership.
- Mentor and develop mechanical engineering staff.
- Assist in project presentations and support business development activities.
- Establish and maintain positive client relationships.
- Provide technical guidance and lead staff training sessions.
- Contribute to staff performance reviews and process improvements.
Project Responsibilities
- Perform Project Manager duties as assigned and serve as Design Manager when needed.
- Ensure discipline design and documentation of building mechanical systems.
- Develop design approaches, project plans, and production methodologies.
- Create and review mechanical drawings, specifications, and calculations.
- Develop control P&ID's and review all project work products.
- Prepare proposals, budgets, and schedules.
- Conduct QA/QC reviews and respond to RFIs and comments.
- Visit construction sites for reviews and punchlisting.
- Adhere to project budgets and schedules, with potential travel as needed.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an ABET-accredited program in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related fields. Postgraduate degrees are a plus.
- Licensed Professional Engineer in at least one US state; NCEES registration preferred.
- Understanding of sustainable design principles; LEED AP and other energy certifications are desirable.
- Proficiency with relevant software and design tools.
- Minimum of 12 years of relevant experience, including leadership roles and diverse project types.
- Strong communication, client management, and team leadership skills.
- Physical ability to perform office and site work, with accommodations as needed.
