Job Description: Senior Mechanical Engineer PE

A Senior Mechanical Engineer PE will be responsible for performing, directing, and supervising all aspects of mechanical engineering, including HVAC, hydronic piping, plumbing, and energy studies on multi-discipline building design projects for commercial and government facilities.

General Responsibilities
  1. Perform all aspects of mechanical engineering design, specifically HVAC engineering, including conceptual studies, program requirements, design analyses, calculations, equipment selection and layout, and system selection and layout.
  2. Meet with clients to prepare and validate scope of work.
  3. Oversee and coordinate mechanical engineering projects and the mechanical portion of multi-discipline projects, working with project managers to meet budgets, contracts, goals, and deadlines.
  4. Coordinate and communicate all aspects of mechanical design within multi-disciplinary teams to ensure proper integration.
  5. Communicate with contractors on Design-Build projects to verify system suitability.
  6. Manage and supervise mechanical engineers and designers, ensuring quality control and staff compliance.
  7. Support the bidding process, including preparing addenda, amendments, and bid tabulations.
  8. Manage construction phase services, including on-site representation, RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings.
  9. Coordinate with building commissioning services as needed.
  10. Work with project teams and respond to directives from project leadership.
  11. Mentor and develop mechanical engineering staff.
  12. Assist in project presentations and support business development activities.
  13. Establish and maintain positive client relationships.
  14. Provide technical guidance and lead staff training sessions.
  15. Contribute to staff performance reviews and process improvements.
Project Responsibilities
  1. Perform Project Manager duties as assigned and serve as Design Manager when needed.
  2. Ensure discipline design and documentation of building mechanical systems.
  3. Develop design approaches, project plans, and production methodologies.
  4. Create and review mechanical drawings, specifications, and calculations.
  5. Develop control P&ID's and review all project work products.
  6. Prepare proposals, budgets, and schedules.
  7. Conduct QA/QC reviews and respond to RFIs and comments.
  8. Visit construction sites for reviews and punchlisting.
  9. Adhere to project budgets and schedules, with potential travel as needed.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an ABET-accredited program in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related fields. Postgraduate degrees are a plus.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in at least one US state; NCEES registration preferred.
  • Understanding of sustainable design principles; LEED AP and other energy certifications are desirable.
  • Proficiency with relevant software and design tools.
  • Minimum of 12 years of relevant experience, including leadership roles and diverse project types.
  • Strong communication, client management, and team leadership skills.
  • Physical ability to perform office and site work, with accommodations as needed.
  • Workplace flexibility with designated in-office days for collaboration.
