Job summary

Northrop Grumman seeks a senior mechanical engineer to join the Flight Systems Futures team focused on hypersonic re-entry vehicles and payloads. You will lead mechanical layout, interfaces, and verification activities across subsystems, ensuring producibility and integration on the factory floor.

A strong background in FEA and CAD is required, with travel up to 25%. Applicant must hold a Top Secret clearance and be a US citizen; relocation is negotiable.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Active Top Secret clearance at time of application, current and within scope.
  • 5+ years of relevant structural analysis or design experience.
  • 3+ years experience performing finite element analysis (FEA) of metallic and/or composite structures.
  • 3+ years experience generating and checking stress reports, margins of safety, and load paths.
  • 3+ years experience interpreting loads and environments and applying them in structural models.
  • Willing to travel up to 25% of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Define and maintain the overall mechanical layout for the vehicle and major subsystems.
  • Coordinate mass properties, interfaces, and maintainability across the configuration.
  • Oversee creation and release of mechanical designs, 3D models, and drawings.
  • Ensure interfaces between subsystems are defined, controlled, and compatible.
  • Resolve mechanical integration issues between aerothermal, TPS, structures, GNC, propulsion, and avionics.
  • Flow down system requirements into mechanical requirements and design criteria.
  • Work with systems engineering to maintain traceability and verification methods.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure producibility and testability.
  • Support build and integration on the factory floor.
  • Provide technical direction to mechanical suppliers.
  • Plan and coordinate mechanical engineering work across a small team.
  • Review and approve design work against program standards.
  • Mentor junior engineers and foster cross-disciplinary communication.
