Qualifications

Senior Mechanical Engineer (HVAC & Plumbing)

Position Number: 0014301 | Location: Hanover, NH | Status: Regular Full Time, Exempt, 40 hours/week, Onsite only.

Position Purpose

The Senior Mechanical Engineer participates in all aspects of day‑to‑day operations of the Dartmouth College engineering office. Responsibilities include reviewing and providing technical oversight of projects designed by outside consultants; collaborating with Project Managers on in‑house design and renovation projects; working with Facilities Operations and Maintenance (FO&M) shops on system upgrades, improvements and replacements; and assisting with design and analysis of energy‑efficiency projects. Tasks include design reviews, field investigations, existing systems assessment, HVAC/plumbing system design and layout, equipment selection and specification, drafting, code review, calculations, HVAC control system sequencing, construction administration, and continuous improvement of campus Design and Construction Guidelines.

Responsibilities
  • Owner’s Engineer – Provides mechanical engineering oversight of consultants during studies, design, construction, and commissioning of new construction and renovation projects in campus buildings, utility plants, and utility distribution systems (≈65%).
  • Department Liaison – Acts as liaison between FO&M and various departments requesting engineering support campus‑wide; troubleshoots and implements solutions for maintenance/operations projects (≈10%).
  • Engineering Design & Construction Administration – Prepares bid documents, system layout and design, drafting and specifications for small renovation projects; provides construction administration services including shop drawing review, field inspections, and as‑built documentation (≈10%).
  • Campus Design and Construction Guidelines – Participates in continuous improvement of campus design and construction guidelines (≈5%).
  • Culture & Employee Belonging (CEB) – Promotes inclusive culture, participates in DEI initiatives, and upholds professionalism and collegiality (≈10%).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications – Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or architectural engineering technology or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ten (10) plus years of mechanical design and drafting with an MEP consulting firm, or equivalent.
  • Registered Professional Mechanical Engineer in New Hampshire, or ability to obtain such registration within one (1) year of employment.
  • Minimum five (5) years of mechanical drafting experience using AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with all aspects of HVAC and plumbing design, including load calculations, system sizing, equipment selection/specification, field verification, codes and standards, and controls design.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with energy‑efficient HVAC system design and control strategies.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills in the operation and maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Detail‑oriented self‑starter with strong interpersonal and decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to relate well with a diverse group of constituents and build strong relationships.
  • Strong service orientation and a desire to continually improve organization operations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a college or university environment.
  • Knowledge of the International Building Code and experience working with authority‑having‑jurisdiction for compliance requirements.
  • High proficiency with AutoCAD drafting software; proficiency with 3D drafting software such as Revit.
  • Active LEED BD+C AP certification.
