Job summary

HPM is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to serve as a technical advocate across municipal, commercial, industrial, and institutional projects in Birmingham, AL. The role includes design strategy, preliminary design, peer review of EOR packages, and risk mitigation from inception to commissioning.

The candidate should have 10–15+ years in detailed design with owner representation, PE licensure, and strong HVAC, piping, and BAS/BMS expertise to ensure project success and compliance.

Qualifications

• Education: B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
• Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• 10-15+ years total experience in detailed design with owner representation or facility operations.
• Strong background in industrial plant utilities, process piping, heavy HVAC/chilled water, boilers, and building controls (BAS/BMS).
• Expert knowledge of codes (ASHRAE, IBC, NFPA, ASME).
• Excellent technical writing and executive presentation capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Design Oversight & EOR Peer Review: peer-review mechanical deliverables from third-party EORs.
• Identify scope gaps, over-design, constructability issues, and code risks before bid.
• Value Engineering: assess total cost of ownership and energy efficiency; lead VE workshops.
• Front-End Scope & RFP Development: define criteria and draft RFPs for EORs and consultants.
• Construction Oversight & Commissioning Support: site audits and commissioning oversight.
• Technical Escalation: resolve design disputes between Owner, GC, and EOR.
