Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, CA is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical, plumbing, and specialty systems across campus, enhancing safety, efficiency, and reliability while supporting world‑class science.

You will independently plan and execute projects, troubleshoot equipment, develop scopes of work, evaluate system performance, and coordinate with other disciplines to deliver complete solutions. Collaboration with external consultants will be common.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline.
• 8+ years in construction, operation and maintenance of mechanical systems.
• Experience with HVAC, plumbing and complex systems in research environments.
• Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues.

Responsibilities

• Serve as SME for assigned mechanical, plumbing, and specialty plumbing systems.
• Lead problem-solving efforts and meetings to set priorities and direction.
• Conduct equipment failure investigations, trend reviews, and functional testing to evaluate system performance.
• Evaluate systems’ spare capacity and ability to support scientific equipment installations.
• Develop conceptual designs and scopes of work to address deficiencies and improvements, coordinating with other disciplines.
• Specify equipment replacements for improved performance and cost-effectiveness.
• Improve system documentation, diagrams, and procedures to reflect current conditions.
• Contribute to infrastructure planning and modernization by providing recommendations for capital investments.
• Utilize CMMS to complete work orders and track asset history, repairs, and trends.
• Work with external consultants or contractors to execute assessments or replacements.
• Maintain master specifications and standard details.
• Support design/construction projects with scope, design criteria, reviews, submittals, and commissioning.
