Job summary

Fortastra is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer in Torrance, CA to own the mechanical design and integration of power subsystems on our spacecraft. You will engineer battery and solar hardware, mounting, thermal management, and harness routing for flight-ready systems.

You will collaborate with power electronics, avionics, thermal, and structures teams to ensure robust, maintainable designs and support build and test activities on an aerospace program.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
• 5+ years designing spacecraft mechanical systems.
• Experience with batteries or power hardware is preferred.
• Proficient in 3D CAD and drawing release with tolerances.

Responsibilities

• Design mechanical integration for spacecraft batteries, solar panels or arrays, and supporting structures and mechanisms.
• Own CAD models for battery modules, solar panel assemblies, mounting brackets, deployment linkages, and related hardware.
• Define mechanical interfaces, connector placements, and harness routing strategies with power/avionics teams.
• Account for thermal, structural, and vibration requirements in mechanical design of power subsystems.
• Generate drawings, BOMs, and documentation for battery and solar hardware with revision control.
• Support trades on panel and battery placement, packaging efficiency, and maintainability on the vehicle.
• Collaborate with manufacturing and integration teams to ensure buildable, testable, serviceable designs.
• Identify and resolve mechanical issues related to cable routing, clearances, and interactions between power subsystems and other spacecraft hardware.
