Prime Data Centers in the United States is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical design efforts across data center projects, including new construction, phased expansions, retrofits and upgrades.

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university; FE exam passed or EIT preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in mission critical and/or data center mechanical design and construction.
  • Understanding of critical cooling infrastructure and redundancy in data centers.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Psychrometric analysis, Load/Energy calculations, CFD analysis.
  • Familiarity with IBC/IMC and data center standards (ASHRAE TC9.9, BICSI).

About The Role

The Prime Data Centers (PDC) Sr. Mechanical Engineer reports to the VP of Engineering and is responsible for mechanical engineering efforts related to a portfolio of data center projects which can include new construction, phased expansion, retrofits and upgrades, acquisition conversions, MEFP (Mechanical, Electrical, Fire Protection, Plumbing) equipment standards, development of design standards, processes, and procedures.

This role will support long-term business strategies aligned with key Prime stakeholders to support the relationship and output of key design partners and equipment suppliers for their assigned projects.

What You'll Do
Innovation and collaboration
  • Supports innovation & development in concert with the VP of Engineering and other PDC stakeholders including investigation of new products and services, and how they will be assimilated into PDC standards.
  • Collaborates with Operations teams to ensure design standards and best practices align with their requirements.
  • Method Of Procedure (MOP) review and validation with Operations teams.
Design and construction support
  • Performs mechanical engineering tasks to support master planning/concept designs as part of PDC's investment planning, review, and approval process.
  • Reviews and performs bid levelling/scope verification for design services proposals.
  • Reviews consultants' engineering calculations and performs independent engineering/cost analysis as assigned.
  • Supports the design and construction team to provide detailed owner review of design and construction deliverables such as early design packages, drawings, specifications, equipment submittals, Requests for Information (RFI's), and informal coordination.
  • Opines on proposed deviations to the standards or the requirements.
  • Researches new designs, materials, and construction methods for data center mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection equipment and related components.
  • Conducts value engineering analyses and provides system recommendations based on ROI and simple payback in collaboration with construction cost estimator(s).
  • Performs review of Integrated Automation System (IAS) points list and sequences of operation authored by others.
  • IAS includes BAS/BMS (HVAC controls), EPMS (Electrical controls), and DCIM (Customer portal).
  • Utilizes engineering analysis programs (or reviewing works created by others) along with engineering judgment to analyze the following:
  • Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) calculations.
  • Normal and failure mode load and electrical block sizing calculations.
  • Simple payback/ROI calculations for various system/equipment comparisons.
  • Energy modeling analysis and reports (review only).
  • Hydraulic calculations for water-based hydronic, plumbing, and fire protection systems (review only)
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis and reports (review only).
Customer interface and facility support
  • Attends various design and construction related meetings with other PDC stakeholders, design consultants, and construction partners.
  • Most meetings will be virtual with some on-site meetings required on an as-needed basis.
  • Participates in Factory Witness Testing (FWT) of critical mechanical equipment when assigned.
  • Participates in technical meetings with customers when assigned.
  • On-site commissioning (Cx) support of Level 4 and Level 5 Cx efforts when assigned.
  • Troubleshoots mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection system challenges/issues when assigned.
  • Responds on an as-needed basis to emergencies.
  • Additional duties as assigned from time to time by the VP of Engineering.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, from an accredited university or college; Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam passed/Engineer In Training (EIT) preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in mission critical and/or data center mechanical design and construction required.
  • Understanding of critical cooling infrastructure within a data center and how power sources provide cooling redundancy.
  • Proficient in Bluebeam, Teams, Excel, and Word software.
  • Experience in working with engineering software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Psychrometric analysis, Load/Energy calculations, and CFD analysis.
  • Understanding of applicable construction codes with an emphasis on the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Mechanical Code (IMC).
  • Understanding of data center industry standards (e.g. ASHRAE TC9.9, BICSI Data Center Standards)
  • Total Compensation: $220K - $245K, Inclusive of Base + annual performance bonus, varying upon skillset and experience.
  • 401k up to a 4% employer match that is fully vested upon enrollment
