Job summary

Salas O’Brien, Inc. is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to serve as the technical lead for Fed-Florida Business Unit projects in Merritt Island. You will design HVAC, piping, and fire protection systems, perform energy analyses, and coordinate with multi-discipline teams while ensuring compliance with codes and project requirements.

The role reports to the Director of Design Operations and requires 8+ years of experience, a PE, and experience with CAD/Revit. Travel up to 25% is expected.

Qualifications

• BS Mechanical Engineering degree required from an ABET-accredited program.
• 8+ years of professional Mechanical Engineering experience.
• PE Certification required.
• Proficient in Microsoft 365 applications.
• Working knowledge of ASHRAE, ASME, NFPA, NEC, UFC codes; familiarity with FBC/IBC/IMC/IPC/AFMAN/SSMAN is preferred.
• Experience with CAD, Revit, Bluebeam Revu or similar modeling/drafting software.

Job Summary:

The Senior Mechanical Engineer functions as the overall technical lead for Fed-Florida Business Unit projects. Technical duties in Mechanical engineering require adaptability and versatility. Examples of the type of work to be performed include the design of mechanical and plumbing components and systems; engineering calculations and analysis of thermal and fluid dynamics; development of HVAC system designs for a variety of facility types; and fire protection and life safety system design and integration. Additional responsibilities encompass the evaluation and selection of mechanical equipment, energy efficiency analysis, coordination of mechanical systems with other disciplines, construction administration and field support, as well as facility condition assessments and capital asset management planning for mechanical infrastructure.

This position operationally reports to the Director of Design Operations.

Technical Responsibilities (85-90%):

• Perform project direct billable functions and responsibilities to maintain a personal utilization rate of 85%-90%.
• Responsible for the overall technical quality of assigned projects to ensure design compliance to meet SOW requirements and all applicable codes and standards.
• Oversees discipline-specific personnel and technical execution of design. This may include both local personnel and other internal business units within Salas O’ Brien.
• Responsible for performing engineering tasks such as site design, permitting, assessments, and construction management.
• Adheres to Project Management Plans (PMP) and Quality Control (QC) programs as assigned but does not change them without approval.
• May be assigned as Engineer of Record (EOR) and/or Design Lead.
• Participates in Fed-Florida Quality Control Program providing final approval of all Mechanical work products, performing Chief Engineer responsibilities, and/or performing Design Manager responsibilities when assigned (reference "Project Quality Control Policies and Processes" ).
• Ensure adherence to Fed-Florida’s quality control standards, including pass-through services/consulting.

Business Development Responsibilities (10-15%)

• Tactical business development - Review RFP/RFQ/SOW as well as prebid drawings and specifications to determine resource requirements and risk/benefit potential for each assigned proposal opportunity.
• Strategic business development – Support the Director in cultivating and maintaining Fed-Florida’s strategic growth targets and growth areas as requested.
• Oversee design-build coordination for Mechanical scope of work on assigned proposals. Coordinate subcontractor services that will be necessary or could impact the Mechanical scope of work. Ensure the GC Prime has sufficient technical input to competitively price their means-methods to construct the project.
• Coordinate with other design disciplines to ensure related scopes have adequate level of effort with minimal redundancies on assigned proposals.
• Participate in go/no-go decisions, oral presentations, capture management, technical approach narratives, qualification packages, elevator pitches, industry days, and conferences as requested.
• As requested, identify/suggest opportunity-specific teammates, subcontractors (geotechnical, survey, SUE, structural, hazmat sampling, biological, cultural resources), hardware, software, training, badging, certifications, licenses, safety and travel needs that are likely to be required to perform the Mechanical scope of work. Clarify scope of services to clearly explain Fed-Florida’s understanding of the Mechanical scope of work through clarifications, assumptions, and exclusions.

Operational Responsibilities (5-10%)

• Assists the Director of Mechanical Engineer in specialized projects to advance the growth of Fed-Florida. These tasks may include but are not limited to mentoring interns/new hires, providing input for process improvements, assisting in the development of our continuously growing training program.

• 8+ years of professional Mechanical Engineering experience
• PE Certification

• Must have working knowledge of the ASHRAE, ASME, NFPA, NEC, UFC, and UFC codes; with a preference for knowledge of the FBC, IBC, IMC, and IPC, and AFMAN/SSMAN requirements.
• Experience with CAD, Revit, Bluebeam Revu, or other Mechanical system modeling/drafting software is highly preferred.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

• Must be a US Citizen for Security Clearance requirements.
• Active/Interim or ability to obtain Secret Security Clearance.

Travel: Up to 25%

The expected base salary range for this role for Merritt Island is $125,000-$135,000 USD per year and in Bethesda is $145,000-$165,000. Actual compensation will be determined based on several factors, including skills, experience, qualifications, and location.
