Job summary

Airloom Energy is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the mechanical design and development of wind energy systems at our Laramie, WY or Orange County, CA locations. The role involves detailed CAD work, analyses, and mentoring engineers, with a focus on manufacturability and continuous improvement.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, guide R&D efforts, and oversee prototype builds, testing, and design iteration to scale our breakthrough wind energy technology.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of mechanical engineering experience with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks and 3D CAD.
• Experience in the aerospace, automotive, or industrial sector preferred.
• Deep understanding of materials, margins, and allowables; familiarity with FEA/CFD.

Responsibilities

• Conceptual mechanical design with cross-functional teams.
• Perform structural, thermal, and fluid analyses to optimize designs.

Role Description

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will work on-site in the Laramie, WY, USA or Orange County, CA, USA Airloom Energy locations in a full-time capacity, contributing to the mechanical design and development of next-generation wind energy systems and components. Day-to-day responsibilities include creating and reviewing detailed mechanical designs, performing structural and mechanical analyses, and producing CAD models and drawings for manufacturing and assembly. The role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, guiding R&D efforts to validate new concepts, and overseeing prototype builds, testing, and design iteration. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will also manage technical aspects of projects, support documentation and compliance activities, and mentor other engineers to ensure high-quality execution and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

7+ years of experience in mechanical engineering with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field

• Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks)
• Experience in the aerospace, automotive, or industrial sector is preferred

Deep understanding of allowables, materials (metallics and composites), boundary conditions, and margin associated with tools like FEA and CFD

• Metallics - complex design using 4XXX, 4XX, A572, A36, steels as well as 2024, 6061 and 7075 aluminum
• Composites - complex design with fiberglass and carbon fiber lamina and laminate
• Bonding - complex design principles for injection and surface structural bonding
• Fasteners - Detailed fastener analysis techniques for highly loaded slip-critical joint design
• Fatigue and Ultimate - Complex design and verification methods at system-level (vehicle-level) for fatigue, stiffness, and ultimate strength driven design. Detailed understanding of margins and allowables required.

Substantial experience transitioning products from design into manufacturing at scale

• Deep understanding of DFM, fabrication, and V&V testing to resolve tolerances and margins to requirements
• Experience with aerospace or industrial standards and regulations (e.g., IEC, ASTM, ISO, ASME, SAE, FAA)
• Experience collaborating directly with manufacturing groups and assessing cost-down opportunities

Role Responsibilities

• Conceptual Design:Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop innovative mechanical concepts and solutions
• Analysis: Conduct structural, thermal, and fluid flow analyses to optimize designs and ensure performance
• Prototyping and Testing: Oversee the fabrication and testing of prototypes to validate design concepts
• Manufacturing Support: Work closely with manufacturing engineers to ensure designs are manufacturable and cost effective
• Documentation: Develop comprehensive technical documentation, including design specifications, test reports, and engineering documentation
• Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers
