Job summary

Uster in Knoxville, TN seeks a Lead Mechanical Engineer to drive design and development of new product platforms and major enhancements. You will own complete mechanical systems through the lifecycle, develop concepts, perform analyses, and guide production releases.

You will mentor teams, assess manufacturability, and contribute to long-term technology direction, with strong CAD, documentation, and communication skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum 5 years of product development experience.
• Experience owning mechanical systems from concept through production.
• Strong 3D CAD design and product documentation skills.
• Understanding of machining, sheet metal, molded plastics, and assemblies.
• Excellent verbal and written communication.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and development efforts for new product platforms and major product enhancements.
• Own complete mechanical systems and subsystems throughout the product lifecycle.
• Develop and evaluate multiple design concepts and select optimal solutions based on technical, business, and customer needs.
• Perform engineering analysis to validate design decisions.
• Execute product development activities from concept through production release.
• Identify technical risks early and develop mitigation strategies.
• Serve as the technical owner for assigned products and mechanical systems.
• Make independent engineering recommendations within defined program objectives.
• Influence product architecture and long-term technology direction.

• Manage engineering changes and support configuration control processes.
• Ensure designs consider manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, reliability, and cost targets.
• Drive improvements that reduce recurring product issues and improve product robustness.
• Support root cause investigations when required.

• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including machining, sheet metal, molded plastics, and assemblies.
• Demonstrated ability to independently analyze technical problems and make recommendations.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred:

• Experience leading significant product development programs.
• Experience with industrial equipment, instrumentation, or durable products.
• Experience with design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), FMEA, and structured design reviews.
