Job summary

Upwing Energy is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, build, test, and validation of Subsurface Compressor Systems. You will apply hands-on problem solving, perform closed-form calculations, and oversee mechanical design across components and subsystems in a fast-paced environment.

The role requires 8+ years in engineering, strong SolidWorks/FEA experience, and deep knowledge of GD&T and turbomachinery components such as bearings and seals.

Qualifications

• BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
• 8+ years of experience in an engineering role.
• 3+ years of experience with SolidWorks 3D modeling software.
• Strong knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T including GD&T.
• Experience designing turbomachinery components such as bearings and seals is desired.
• Understanding of electro-mechanical design and component packaging.
• Proven ability to maintain technical ownership of the design.
• Proficient with hand calculations and FEA to validate design decisions.
• Proficient with closed-form calculations for hardware design.
• Experience in rotating machinery is desired.
• Experience with high-speed turbomachinery and/or permanent magnet motors is desired.
• Project management, coordination, and supervision skills are desired.

Responsibilities

• Generates 3D & 2D design solutions for Subsurface Compressor System technology and related components.
• Design validation through bench-level testing and calculations.
• Act as Change Review Board approver of changes and hardware disposition.
• Evaluate and disposition supplier non-conformances.
• Troubleshoot components and assemblies using production and test hardware.
• Assist with first article builds by participating in assembly and test.
• Generate supporting documentation (drawings, layouts, reports, P&IDs, etc.).
• Apply best manufacturing methods to the design including GD&T.
• Perform peer drawing checks as a critical process step.
• Conceptualize new designs based on proven designs and innovations.
• Perform mechanical calculations for design and packaging of high-speed rotating machinery.
• Ensure timely and correct technical release of drawings to meet schedules.
• Assist cross-functional team members as needed.
• Review drawings for completeness and accuracy.
• Apply critical thinking to all steps.
• Stack-Up analyses of assemblies.
• Manage assembly BOM and ensure accuracy in PDM and ERP systems.

Job description

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be a member of our engineering team, supporting the design, build, test, and validation of our Subsurface Compressor Systems™ (SCS). This position will require leadership and support of a broad range of product development and validation activities at the component, subsystem, and system levels. This position requires a hands-on approach to problem solving as well as the use of closed form calculations for component design in high-speed rotating machinery applications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Generates 3D & 2D design solutions for Subsurface Compressor System technology and related components, including new designs and modification of existing designs
• Design validation through bench-level testing and calculations
• The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be an integral part of the Change Review Board Process as an approver of changes, design details, and dispositioning of hardware.
• Evaluation and Dispositioning of supplier Non-Conformances
• Component and assembly troubleshooting by using production and test hardware.
• Assist with first article builds of new designs by being a part of the assembly and test process.
• Generates supporting documentation (e.g., drawings, engineering changes, layouts, engineering reports, test plans, specifications, P&IDs etc.)
• Applies best manufacturing methods to the design including GD&T
• Performing Peer drawing checks is a critical part of this position.
• Conceptualizes new designs based on existing proven designs and innovations
• Performs technical calculations in the areas of mechanical design and packaging of high-speed rotating machinery
• Ensures timely and correct technical release of drawings to meet project schedules
• Assists other project team members in cross-functional activities when necessary
• Reviews drawings for completeness and accuracy
• Applies critical thinking to all steps
• Stack-Up analyses of assemblies
• Manages assembly Bill of Materials and ensures its accuracy in PDM and ERP systems.

Skills, Experience, Education, and Abilities

• BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in an Engineering Role
• 3+ years of experience with Solidworks 3D modeling software
• Strong knowledge of ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing including GD&T
• Experience with designing Turbomachinery components such as bearings and seals is desired.
• Understanding of Electro-Mechanical design and component packaging
• Proven capability towards maintaining technical ownership of the design
• Proficient using hand calculations and FEA to validate design decisions.
• Proficient using and creating closed-form calculations for hardware design
• Experience in rotating machinery is desired
