Job summary

Southland Industries in Dulles, Virginia is seeking a seasoned construction engineering designer to design and implement building systems, including fire protection, plumbing, HVAC, and other mechanical disciplines for large-scale projects.

You will prepare calculations, drawings, and specifications, oversee layout development and permits, conduct field surveys, coordinate teams, respond to RFIs, create as-builts, and support change orders while ensuring quality and schedule adherence.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required
• 5+ years of experience in construction engineering design
• Two-year certificate from college or technical school in related course work or applicable field experience preferred
• NICET Level II Certification for Fire Protection
• Knowledge of zone layout and design principles, including preparation of drawings, calculations, and material submittals
• Good communication skills for providing project status and issues to managers and stakeholders
• Strong attention to detail, demonstrated through quality submittals, fabrication drawings, and surveys
• Proficient knowledge of design software platforms including AutoSprink, AutoCad, NAVIS and REVIT

Responsibilities

• Prepares complex calculations, drawings, and technical specifications for large-scale design projects
• Completes calculations, drawings, and specifications related to the assigned disciplines for large projects
• Oversees the entire lifecycle of large projects, including layout development, permit procurement, field surveys, coordination, creation of fabrication lists, responding to field-generated questions, RFI creation, as-builts, and other required documentation and submissions
• Supports change order processes by providing accurate and timely project information
• Provides technical guidance to less experienced team members and ensures quality, documentation accuracy, and schedule compliance
• Monitors project design budgets and collaborates with teams to support project execution
