Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of equipment/component design experience.
  • Hands-on with 3D CAD; SolidWorks strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in finite element stress analysis and first-principles calculations.
  • Experience with design of experiments and product testing methodologies.
  • DFM/ DFA principles familiarity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; independent work.

Responsibilities

  • Lead conceptual and preliminary design of reactor core components, reactor structures, and Nuclear Island components for the next generation Nuclear Reactor.
  • Coordinate with Engineering and Project teams to develop equipment design solutions including drawings, 3D models, and specifications.
  • Plan design activities, manage execution to schedule, and perform scoping analyses and trade studies across design options.
  • Propose and develop test programs to validate functional and performance design requirements; support test requirements documentation and nuclear product test campaigns.
  • Interface with cross-functional teams, subcontractors, and vendors—providing technical direction, peer review, and mentoring to junior engineers.
  • Apply nuclear industry best practices and proactively identify process improvement opportunities to maintain the highest quality of engineering design.

Job Site: Remote within the United States

Pay Rate Range: $52-85/hr

1+ year contract with option for unlimited extensions

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Core Components) for a nuclear technology company pioneering next-generation reactor design. This would be a great opportunity for someone with experience in mechanical equipment design, structural analysis, and multi-disciplinary engineering environments looking to further their career in advanced nuclear energy.

  • Lead conceptual and preliminary design of reactor core components, reactor structures, and Nuclear Island components for the next generation Nuclear Reactor.
  • Coordinate with Engineering and Project teams to develop equipment design solutions including drawings, 3D models, and specifications.
  • Plan design activities, manage execution to schedule, and perform scoping analyses and trade studies across design options.
  • Propose and develop test programs to validate functional and performance design requirements; support test requirements documentation and nuclear product test campaigns.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent; 5+ years of equipment/component design experience (relevant M.S. or Doctorate may be credited for up to 2 or 4 years, respectively).
  • Hands-on experience with 3D CAD; SolidWorks strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in finite element stress analysis, mechanical analysis methods, and first-principles calculations.
  • Experience with design of experiments, including product testing methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work independently with minimal direction across concurrent tasks.
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS
  • Familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III Division 5.
  • Nuclear industry design experience, particularly with core assemblies; working knowledge of DOE and NRC regulations.
  • Experience with ANSYS FEA and first-principles structural analysis in a nuclear context.
  • Background in manufacturing methodology, first article production, and vendor/supplier technical evaluation.
  • Knowledge of neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, or structural analysis in reactor design.
