Amphenol Communications Solutions in Schaumburg, IL is seeking a Product Development Engineer - Mechanical Design for Liquid Cooling. This experienced role focuses on leading design of cold plates and cooling assemblies for high-speed I/O and AI infrastructure, from concept through production.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years in mechanical design, strong CAD skills (Creo/SolidWorks), GD&T expertise, and the ability to collaborate with thermal engineers, suppliers, and global teams to deliver

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; master's preferred.
• 5+ years hands-on mechanical design and product development ownership.
• Strong proficiency in 3D CAD and production drawing development.
• Solid understanding of GD&T, tolerancing, material selection and DFM/DFD.
• Experience with precision components and assemblies and manufacturing processes.
• Ability to troubleshoot hardware, lead prototype builds and interpret tests.
• Strong communication with customers, suppliers, and global teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead concept generation and detailed mechanical design of liquid cooling components and assemblies for high-speed I/O and AI infrastructure applications.
• Create 3D CAD models, drawings, GD&T, tolerance analyses, and BOMs for precision components and assemblies.
• Develop robust designs addressing fit, flatness, stiffness, contact force, sealing, assembly, and serviceability.
• Collaborate with thermal/thermal-mechanical teams to translate requirements into practical designs.
• Work with manufacturing and suppliers to select materials, improve manufacturability, and resolve issues.
• Develop mechanical and reliability validation plans with cross-functional teams including tests.
• Perform FMEA, tolerance analysis, DFM/DFA, risk assessments; support prototype builds and root-cause analysis.
• Own development activities from concept through qualification, NPI, and production release.
• Manage schedules, deliverables, risks and engineering changes across global teams.
• Maintain documentation and communicate progress and tradeoffs clearly.
• Serve as mechanical interface for customers with thermal specialists for discussions.
• Translate customer requirements into design goals and present concepts and results.
• Incorporate customer feedback through reviews, prototyping and qualification.
