Hyperion Technology Group, Inc. is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer who will take full ownership of the mechanical design and engineering aspects for a range of machinery and tooling projects, spanning from small-scale R&D initiatives to large-scale production equipment. This role involves collaborating closely with customers to define project requirements and specifications. The engineer will work within an interdisciplinary team to deliver well-integrated, functional automation solutions.

HTG builds custom sensor systems, automated machinery, testing equipment, and specialized systems for a variety of industries, including but not limited to Medical/Life Sciences, Automotive, Industrial, Military Systems, and Government Research and Development.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Lead the design of custom automated machinery and tooling systems, mechanisms, and components.
  • Drive the continuous improvement of design processes, implementing best practices and industry standards.
  • Integrate both off-the-shelf and custom automation technologies, including robotics, actuation systems, sensors, vision systems, and other peripherals.
  • Ensure projects meet budget and timeline constraints by coordinating progress with project managers and key stakeholders.
  • Create detailed 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings for custom designs.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to fellow engineers, including reviewing, approving, and guiding their design work.
  • Offer ongoing support to the production team during the build and commissioning phases, ensuring designs are executed effectively.
  • When necessary, build and test prototypes to validate designs before finalization.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, ensuring seamless integration of controls and software with the mechanical systems.
  • Manage relationships with external suppliers, coordinating procurement of components and materials.
  • Work directly with customers to refine project requirements and ensure alignment on design specifications.
  • Provide on-site support for equipment deployment and troubleshooting as required

Required Experience:

  • 8+ years of experience designing custom automated equipment.
  • Proven expertise in automation and custom machine design, with a strong track record of successful project delivery.
  • Ability to select and specify components such as actuators, sensors, vision systems, precision motion transport systems and other automation peripherals.
  • Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks Software for mechanical design.
  • In-depth knowledge of engineering drawings, tolerances, and manufacturing specifications.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and Y14.5M-2009 standards.
  • Extensive experience with materials and fabrication techniques, including machining and welding.
  • Familiarity with controls and software integration concepts.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a keen ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and automation issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficient in specifying and troubleshooting pneumatic and hydraulic components.
  • General familiarity with automation controls - ex., PLC's, HMI's, sensor systems, machine vision, motion control and safety systems.
  • Expertise in designing and engineering fixtures, jigs, and other tooling.

Preferred Experience:

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in an engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical design within industrial automation or machine building environments.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or similar project management certification is preferred.
  • Knowledge of CE, NFPA 79, and SEMI S8 standards and compliance requirements.
  • Direct experience troubleshooting automated equipment and systems.
Physical Requirements:
  • Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors.
  • Candidate must be able to lift 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
