Job description

Developing advanced electric motor technologies that expand the operating capabilities of electric machines. Our multidisciplinary team works across electromagnetic design, mechanical engineering, controls, power electronics, prototyping, and testing to bring new motor architectures from concept through validated hardware.Design motor components and assemblies, including housings, shafts, rotors, bearing systems, end structures, cooling systems, seals, interfaces, and retention features. Translate electromagnetic, thermal, structural, manufacturing, and system requirements into integrated mechanical designs.

The Role

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the mechanical aspects of electric motor development. This is a hands‑on product development role for an engineer who can translate performance requirements into practical, manufacturable, and reliable mechanical designs.

The ideal candidate has approximately 3-7 years of relevant experience, although candidates with additional experience are encouraged to apply. Experience developing new products in the automotive or an adjacent high‑performance industry is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Own the mechanical design of electric motors from early concepts through prototype builds, testing, and design release.
  • Develop detailed 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings, tolerance analyses, and bills of materials.
  • Perform or direct structural, thermal, and rotor‑dynamic analysis using appropriate engineering tools.
  • Evaluate stresses, deflection, fatigue, thermal expansion, bearing loads, critical speeds, and high‑speed rotor integrity.
  • Select appropriate materials, coatings, manufacturing processes, bearings, fasteners, adhesives, and joining methods.
  • Apply GD&T and tolerance‑stack analysis to support reliable assembly and production.
  • Work closely with suppliers and internal technicians to support sourcing, prototype fabrication, assembly, and troubleshooting.
  • Lead mechanical design reviews and clearly communicate design decisions, risks, and tradeoffs.
  • Use DFMEA and other risk‑management methods to identify and address potential failure modes.
  • Develop qualification and validation plans, test procedures, fixtures, and acceptance criteria.
  • Evaluate test data and hardware failures, determine root causes, and implement design improvements.
  • Support the transition from prototype designs to scalable, cost‑effective manufacturing.
  • Maintain clear engineering documentation and configuration control throughout development.
  • Contribute to the continued development of Jacobi's engineering standards, tools, and product‑development processes.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field.
  • Approximately 3-7 years of experience in mechanical design and new‑product development; candidates with greater experience are also welcome.
  • Strong proficiency with modern 3D CAD and engineering‑drawing tools.
  • Experience performing structural and thermal analysis using FEA or related methods.
  • Strong understanding of stress analysis, fatigue, heat transfer, material selection, tolerancing, and design for manufacture and assembly.
  • Experience taking complex hardware from concept through fabrication, assembly, testing, and design iteration.
  • Ability to balance performance, reliability, cost, manufacturability, and schedule.
  • Strong practical problem‑solving skills and a willingness to work directly with prototypes and test hardware.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast‑moving, multidisciplinary startup environment.
Prefer Experience developing new products for the automotive industry, particularly electric powertrains, motors, transmissions, rotating equipment, or other electromechanical systems.
  • Direct experience with the mechanical design of electric motors or generators.
  • Familiarity with high‑speed rotating assemblies, rotor retention, bearing selection, cooling systems, sealing, lubrication, and vibration.
  • Experience with automotive product‑development practices such as DFMEA and design validation.
  • Experience designing qualification tests and fixtures for mechanical, thermal, vibration, shock, durability, environmental, or overspeed testing.
  • Knowledge of automotive materials, manufacturing processes, and supplier development.
  • Experience supporting prototype builds and diagnosing mechanical failures through inspection and test data.
  • Familiarity with NVH, rotor dynamics, fatigue analysis, and thermal‑management systems.
  • Experience working with electromagnetic and controls engineers on tightly integrated electromechanical products.
What Success Looks Like

A successful engineer in this role will take ownership of the mechanical side of a motor‑development program, identify the most important technical risks, create sound and manufacturable designs, and move efficiently from analysis to hardware and validated results. You will combine strong engineering fundamentals with practical judgment and a genuine interest in building and testing new technology. You will seek to identify potential issues quickly and communicate them with the team to ensure that they can be adequately addressed and prioritized.

Why Join
  • Work directly on novel electric motor technology with meaningful technical and commercial potential.
  • Own important design decisions and see your work progress rapidly from concept to operating hardware.
  • Collaborate closely with specialists in electromagnetics, controls, power electronics, manufacturing, and testing.
  • Help shape the products, engineering processes, and technical capabilities of a growing company.
  • Gain broad responsibility and influence beyond the boundaries of a narrowly defined engineering position.

equal‑opportunity employer. We value technical excellence, curiosity, sound judgment, collaboration, and a willingness to take ownership.
