Job summary

Lumentum is seeking a Mechanical Component Engineer to own the engineering lifecycle of mechanical components used in optical and electronic products.

You will collaborate with Mechanical Design, R&D, Supplier Quality, and manufacturing to ensure robust component specifications, qualification, and long-term supply reliability, while leading technical problem-solving and change management.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
• 5+ years of mechanical component engineering experience.
• Experience interpreting drawings, specs, and inspection reports.
• Knowledge of machining, stamping, molding, casting, extrusion, plating, finishing, and assembly.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Engineering and Supplier Quality to drive manufacturability into mechanical component design and selection.
• Own Component Engineering activities, including technical requirements, selection, qualification, lifecycle management, reliability, and engineering change assessment.
• Define and review component specifications, drawings, CTQs, tolerances, and acceptance criteria to ensure robust and manufacturable designs.
• Lead technical qualification of new and alternate mechanical components, including dimensional, material, functional, environmental, and reliability validation.
• Partner with Supply Chain and Supplier Quality on alternate-source development, providing technical qualification and component risk assessment.
• Assess mechanical component performance, materials, manufacturing processes, tolerance stack-ups, and reliability risks throughout the product lifecycle.
• Evaluate PCNs, EOLs, material/process changes, and engineering changes for technical and product impact.
• Lead technical problem-solving and failure analysis for component-related issues, partnering with Supplier Quality on supplier corrective actions.
• Support R&D, Manufacturing, and Contract Manufacturers in resolving component-related design, assembly, manufacturability, and production issues.
• Establish and maintain mechanical component engineering standards, qualification requirements, and technical documentation.
