Job summary

Span Alaska Transportation is seeking a Senior Mechanic to maintain and repair fleet equipment in a fast-paced shop. You will perform diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and repairs on trucks, forklifts, and related systems, using advanced tools and a strong knowledge base.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

About the Role

At Span Alaska Transportation, we keep Alaska moving, and our Senior Mechanics are critical to ensuring our fleet operates safely, reliably, and efficiently. This advanced-level position is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, inspections, and fabrication work on trucks, forklifts, chassis, and other heavy equipment.

The Senior Mechanic serves as a technical expert within the maintenance team, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools and mechanical expertise to troubleshoot and repair complex vehicle and equipment systems with minimal supervision. This role also supports maintenance administration, parts procurement, and continuous improvement efforts that help maximize equipment uptime and operational efficiency.

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities but serves as a technical resource and mentor for less experienced mechanics.

What you’ll do:

• Perform preventative maintenance on trucks, forklifts, chassis, trailers, and other rolling equipment.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, brake, steering, transmission, and engine systems.
• Perform and document DOT inspections and required safety inspections.
• Disassemble, inspect, repair, and reassemble vehicle and equipment components.
• Troubleshoot complex equipment failures with minimal supervision using diagnostic software and testing equipment.
• Test drive vehicles and equipment to diagnose malfunctions and verify repairs.
• Perform advanced fabrication, welding, oxy-acetylene cutting, and plasma cutting as needed.
• Replace malfunctioning parts, components, and systems.
• Generate, update, and complete work orders through the maintenance management system.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation.
• Support invoice review and approvals as assigned.
• Order parts and assist with purchase order processes.
• Monitor equipment condition and proactively identify preventative maintenance needs.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Partner with drivers, warehouse personnel, operations teams, and fellow mechanics to minimize downtime.
• Assist with winter yard maintenance and operation of snow-removal equipment as required.
• Follow all company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

You have these skills:

• Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
• Strong knowledge of diesel engines, brake systems, steering systems, transmissions, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems.
• Proficiency with diagnostic software and electronic troubleshooting tools.
• Working knowledge of welding, fabrication, and metal repair techniques.
• Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair documentation.
• Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
• Working knowledge of maintenance management software and work order systems.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook and Excel.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple repair assignments.
• Sound judgment and decision‑making skills.
• Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

And these qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Clean driving record.
• Minimum three (3) years of mechanic experience working on commercial vehicles, heavy equipment, forklifts, or related equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to independently diagnose and repair complex mechanical and electrical issues.
• Ability to pass all pre‑employment screening requirements.
• Completion of all required training and recertification programs.
• Ability to understand and follow regulations, procedures, and company policies.

Additional Requirements

• Overtime, emergency repair work, weekend schedules, and on‑call assignments may be required based on operational and business needs.

Extra credit if you have:

• Air Brake Systems Certification.
• Class A or Class B CDL.
• ASE T1‑T8 Certifications.
• Forklift Maintenance Certification.
• OSHA 10 Certification.
• Transportation, freight, or fleet maintenance experience.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to independently lift up to 70 pounds.
• Ability to move heavy components and equipment using proper tools and material‑handling equipment.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and reaching.
• Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate tools and repair equipment.
• Ability to work underneath, around, and inside vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Ability to safely operate vehicles, forklifts, and maintenance equipment.

Work Environment:

• Work performed in a mechanic shop, maintenance yard, and outdoor environments.
• Regular exposure to weather conditions, dirt, dust, noise, exhaust fumes, grease, and moving equipment.
• Frequent proximity to powered industrial equipment and commercial vehicles.
• Use of personal protective equipment is required.

The hourly range is posted for this position in Washington. The hourly rate will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.
