Job summary

Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems in El Segundo, CA, has an opening for an Engineer Material & Process or Principal Engineer Material & Process. This role is located onsite in El Segundo and requires a Secret clearance.

You will research, analyze and test materials for aerospace structures, supporting test programs and development of composites, bonding and NDI methods, while coordinating with design, manufacturing and quality teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor in STEM with at least 2 years of related experience, or a Master’s in STEM with no years of experience.
• Bachelor + 5 years or Master’s + 3 years or PhD + 0 years for Principal Engineer materials & process.
• Minimum 2 years of experience in developing, characterizing composites, writing test plans and reporting results.
• Aerospace, defense or high-reliability manufacturing experience.
• Experience with polymer matrix composites, bonding processes and material testing.
• Familiarity with NDI methods (UT, thermography, radiography) and acceptance criteria.
• Knowledge of ASTM/AMS standards relevant to composites.
• Ability to work cross-functionally with Design, Stress, Manufacturing and Quality teams.
• Current in-scope US Government Secret Clearance; SAP clearance eligibility.
• Ability to work full-time onsite in El Segundo.

Responsibilities

• Support SCD team in developing composite and adhesively bonded structure test programs; report results to stakeholders.
• Help develop NDI reference standards; coordinate QA inspections and shop activities.
• Support material and process development for composites and adhesively bonded assemblies.
• Develop material and process specifications, design allowables and fabrication procedures.
• Perform failure analysis, life predictions and prepare requirements specifications.
• Coordinate with test labs, evaluate vendor materials and produce test reports and briefing materials.
• Solve manufacturing problems and develop M&P requirements from program needs.
• Manage project aspects including cost estimates and schedules.
