Job summary

Northrop Grumman in Sunnyvale, CA, seeks a Staff Materials Engineer, Level 5, to support submarine and shipboard launcher programs on-site. You will lead materials engineering activities, review supplier procedures, and guide test engineers in metrology and nondestructive evaluation.

The ideal candidate has a deep metallurgy and weld background, with DoD contract experience, and the ability to obtain/maintain a secret clearance. Onsite work required at METL facility.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering or related field with extensive experience in materials and weld engineering.
• 10+ years with a Master, 8+ years with a PhD; other combinations depending on experience.
• Strong background in metallurgy, welds, metallographic evaluation, heat treatments, fracture mechanics, corrosion control, and failure analysis.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with staff across disciplines to provide materials engineering expertise during design.
• Provide engineering technical guidance and oversight when quality concerns arise during production.
• Review and approve supplier manufacturing procedures.
• Work with and guide test engineers on characterization activities.
• Provide consultation to suppliers.
• Interact with customer community representatives on technical and programmatic matters.
• Regular collaboration with design engineering, advanced development, manufacturing engineering, quality engineering, and EH&S teams.
