Job summary

Northrop Grumman Marine Systems seeks a Materials Engineer, Level 4 or 5, to join the METL team in Sunnyvale, CA. The role emphasizes metallurgical and weld engineering for ferrous materials within shipboard launcher program spaces.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate advanced materials knowledge, DoD process familiarity, and the ability to influence design, production, and supplier activities in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering with 8 years of experience (or 6 with a Master’s, or 4 with a PhD).
• Extensive materials engineering/science or weld engineering background.
• Experience in metallurgical practices (weld, metallurgy, metallographic evaluation, heat treatments, fracture mechanics, corrosion control, failure analysis).
• Ability to read and understand engineering drawings.
• Familiarity with Navy/DoD processes and workflow.
• US Citizenship required.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a secret-level clearance.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate across disciplines to provide materials engineering expertise during design.
• Provide engineering guidance when quality concerns arise during production.
• Review and approve supplier manufacturing procedures.
• Work with test engineers on characterization activities.
• Provide consultation to suppliers.
• Interact with customer community representatives.
• Collaborate with design engineering, advanced development, manufacturing engineering, quality engineering, EH&S teams.
