Job summary

Naval Nuclear Laboratory seeks a Principal Materials Engineer to lead the Materials Fabrication Facility role, delivering quality work in heat treatment, rolling/forming, alloy development, and chemical processing for metals. You will coordinate lab work requests, review results, and interact with sponsors during planning and execution.

The position also oversees preventive maintenance, facility systems support, and procurement activities, with potential travel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical/engineering/science field with 9+ years of relevant experience; or Master's with 7+ years; or Doctorate with 3+ years; or currently a Principal Reactor Training Engineer, Refueling Engineer, or RPCO Engineer.
  • Preferred experience includes NNL lab operations, air/vacuum heat treatments, alloy development, metal working/forming, and chemical surface treatments.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.

Responsibilities

  • Administration of the laboratory work request process (review/assign work requests, schedule/lead pre-job briefs, review results, update system)
  • Direct interaction with stakeholders during work planning and execution
  • Oversee laboratory equipment preventive maintenance program including pressure systems inspections
  • Oversee upkeep of facility systems supporting the laboratory including craft preventive maintenance
  • Equipment procurement and vendor maintenance support
  • MDL Property Coordinator
  • Position may require some travel
