Job summary

Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico seeks an experienced Senior/Principal Laboratory Support Technologist to join the polymer materials characterization and mechanical testing team. You will work with staff to characterize organic materials, including encapsulants, adhesives and coatings, using a broad suite of techniques.

The role involves leading projects, reporting results to clients, and coordinating with internal and external teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a science, engineering, or engineering technology discipline.
• Ability to work onsite at the laboratory facility as a condition of employment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Perform materials characterization, including thermal analysis (DSC, TMA, TGA, DMA) and rheological testing.
• Conduct mechanical testing using universal testing machines for modulus and strength.
• Design and execute structural tests comparing materials and processing techniques.
• Perform basic organic chemistry, polymer synthesis, and formulation optimization.
• Adapt, design, modify, repair, calibrate instrumentation and develop new apparatus as needed.
• Maintain safety, ES&H documentation, calibrations, and coordinate facilities activities.
• Initiate and lead small research projects and deliver results with minimal supervision.
• Coordinate technical activities with internal and external stakeholders.
• Handle chemicals safely according to hazardous materials procedures and ES&H requirements.
