Job summary

Capstan Medical Inc. is developing a first-of-its-kind surgical robot and seeks an engineer to own software and test systems from subassemblies to full system integration.

You will build hardware-in-the-loop test systems, automate production testing, and collaborate with R&D to translate evolving requirements into validated manufacturing tests. You will drive verification and validation of test software, enable data-driven decisions, and mentor junior engineers.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or related field.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant industry experience, medical device or similar safety-critical system.

Responsibilities

• Define, from first principles, how a first-of-its-kind surgical robot is tested in production; shape the test strategy, architecture, and standards.
• Develop manufacturing tests for robotic subassemblies and systems, from early development through design transfer.
• Own and maintain deployed manufacturing tests, including updates and bug fixes on the production line.
• Derive manufacturing software test requirements from higher-level product/design requirements with traceability.
• Lead verification and validation of manufacturing test software, including protocols, execution, and reports.
• Design and develop hardware-in-the-loop test systems to automate software and hardware testing.
• Develop test methods at the hardware/software interface (brake calibration, encoders, sensors).
• Implement tools to retrieve and analyze device and controller data (logs/diagnostics).
• Support bring-up, debug, and commissioning of fixtures and equipment.
• Deliver manufacturing test readiness on schedule for development, verification, and clinical builds.
• Manage test software releases with versioning and non-disruptive production deployment.
• Analyze test data with scripting tools (e.g., Python) to identify trends and yield drivers.
• Influence firmware/software teams to implement diagnostic hooks and manufacturing-friendly features.
• Document work through design reviews and released documents.
• Identify gaps and pitch in as needed to meet goals.
• Mentor junior engineers and technicians in test development and debugging.
