Job description

Senior Manager, Indirect Tax (100% Remote)

Confidential Client | Renewable Infrastructure

A rapidly growing renewable infrastructure company is seeking a Senior Manager, Indirect Tax to play a critical leadership role within an expanding tax organization. Reporting directly to the Head of Indirect Tax, this individual will serve as the department's operational and technical leader, helping build scalable processes, strengthen controls, and guide complex sales and use tax decisions across large-scale project activities. The organization is investing heavily in its tax function as it continues through a period of significant growth and transformation.

This is not a traditional compliance-focused position. The ideal candidate is a strategic problem solver who enjoys navigating complex taxability questions, partnering with non-tax stakeholders, and improving processes in environments where there is meaningful opportunity to make an impact. The role offers substantial visibility across finance, legal, procurement, operations, and project leadership teams.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Serve as the trusted advisor for complex sales and use tax matters, including taxability analysis, exemption strategies, contract reviews, and transaction planning.

  • Act as the day-to-day leader of the indirect tax function, overseeing team workloads, reviewing technical analyses, and supporting staff development.

  • Partner with business leaders to evaluate the tax implications of construction, procurement, and operational activities before transactions occur.

  • Drive process improvement initiatives across indirect tax compliance, tax accruals, audit support, exemption certificate management, and technology utilization.

  • Research and document positions on multi-state sales and use tax matters and communicate practical recommendations to business stakeholders.

  • Support audits, controversy matters, risk mitigation initiatives, and process modernization efforts.

  • Help shape the future-state design of the indirect tax function as the organization continues to scale.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

  • Join an organization operating at the intersection of infrastructure, energy, and long-term economic growth.

  • Significant runway for professional growth as the tax department expands. The tax organization is expected to grow materially over the coming years.

  • Opportunity to influence systems, processes, and policy rather than simply maintain existing programs.

  • Direct partnership with highly respected tax leadership that values strategic thinking and technical curiosity.

  • Fully remote work environment with leadership known for flexibility and trust. Preference for candidates located in Pacific or Central time zones.

  • Competitive compensation package including base salary, bonus opportunity, and long-term incentive potential.

Ideal Background

We are interested in professionals who bring a combination of:

  • Deep U.S. sales and use tax expertise.

  • Experience supporting construction, engineering, infrastructure, manufacturing, energy, EPC, or other project-based businesses.

  • Strong taxability research and analysis capabilities.

  • Experience advising business partners on complex transaction structures and indirect tax risk.

  • Process improvement and automation mindset.

  • Ability to communicate technical tax concepts to non-tax audiences.

  • Prior experience leading or mentoring tax professionals.

  • CPA, CMI, MST, JD, or related credentials are welcomed but not required.

The Type of Person Who Thrives Here

The strongest candidates will be naturally inquisitive, commercial in their thinking, and comfortable asking probing questions to understand how transactions actually work. This role is well-suited for someone who enjoys untangling complex taxability issues, influencing business decisions, and building better processes rather than simply maintaining existing ones. The team is seeking a leader who can see issues from multiple angles, identify risk before it becomes costly, and help elevate the overall sophistication of the indirect tax function.

Remote (U.S.) with preference for candidates located in Pacific or Central time zones.
