Job Summary

The Senior Manager of Digital Engineering provides strategic and operational leadership across multiple engineering teams or a major engineering function responsible for designing, building, integrating, and maintaining complex digital platforms and capabilities. This role serves as a senior leader within the engineering organization, ensuring that multi-team engineering activities align with enterprise architecture, product strategy, security requirements, and long-term modernization objectives.

The Senior Manager owns engineering execution across a broader scope than the PL1 level, guiding teams through architectural interpretation, technical decision-making, capacity planning, and complex dependency management. The role is responsible for scaling engineering practices, implementing governance structures, and embedding operational excellence—ensuring the digital systems delivered are reliable, resilient, cost-effective, and aligned with evolving business needs.

As a people leader, the Senior Manager develops engineering talent pipelines, supports succession planning, and establishes holistic competency-driven development programs. They lead technical managers, senior engineers, and cross-functional teams, driving a unified culture across the engineering function rooted in innovation, quality, equity, accountability, and continuous learning.

The role is a key influencer in enterprise technology direction, partnering closely with Product leaders, Enterprise Architects, Security, Data, Infrastructure, and Operations teams. The Senior Manager helps shape digital transformation initiatives, supports investment planning and budget cycles, and ensures transparency in execution across programs and platforms. They serve as a critical escalation point for complex technical challenges, production incidents, and organizational impediments. Through strong communication, stakeholder management, and strategic alignment, the Senior Manager ensures engineering outcomes deliver measurable business value while enabling the organization's long-term digital roadmap.

Essential Functions

• Provide leadership, vision, and direction across multiple engineering teams delivering enterprise digital capabilities.
• Establish and enforce engineering best practices, ensuring team adherence to coding standards, architectural principles, security requirements, and operational quality.
• Lead architectural and technical reviews to ensure technical integrity and future scalability.
• Track multi-team engineering performance through KPIs such as predictability, cycle time, defect rates, and reliability metrics and identify systemic delivery challenges and implement corrective actions.
• Oversee SLO/SLA adherence, incident response, root‑cause analysis, and production support processes.
• Lead hiring, performance management, and succession planning for engineers and engineering leads.
• Serve as a key liaison between engineering, architecture, product, and business leaders.
• Drive efficiency and modernization through process and tooling improvements.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline.
• 9 years of engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership or people‑management role.
• Demonstrated experience delivering complex engineering solutions across multiple teams.
• Experience with modern engineering practices (e.g., DevSecOps, CI/CD, test automation).

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in technical/business or equivalent
• 11+ years relevant work experience preferred
• Experience delivering multiple initiatives using Scaled Agile framework methodology .
• Have utilized Atlassian tools such as JIRA and Confluence

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• E xperience with AI -powered software e ngineering practices.
• Knowledge of Adobe Experience Platform, web analytics, and experimentation frameworks.
• Hands on e xperience with implementing solutions in AWS
• Strong leadership, planning, and people management skills.
• Expertise in operational excellence practices, including monitoring, SLOs, incident management, and reliability engineering.

Environmental Conditions/Physical Demands

The salary/hourly range is $149,400.00 – $193,644.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
