Job summary

NJ TRANSIT in Newark seeks a Senior Maintenance Instructor to train foremen, repairmen, service personnel and bus cleaners, ensuring the workforce can maintain NJ TRANSIT equipment and facilities.

The role involves developing and delivering maintenance courses, partnering with vendors, and delivering programs on diesel-powered and hybrid propulsion systems, electrical circuitry, aftertreatment, HVAC and safety standards. A strong instructional background is preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two years of formal technical training plus five years of diesel-powered vehicle maintenance experience.
  • ASE certification or CDL/other licenses are desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Research, develop, implement, maintain and review maintenance training courses with manufacturers and vendors.
  • Present formal maintenance training programs leading to qualification of bus maintenance personnel.
  • Conduct impromptu garage training to ensure proficiency in electric/hybrid propulsion, aftertreatment, air brakes, multiplex systems, batteries and HVAC.
  • Assimilate new technology, including online training and vendor web-based training, into course offerings.
  • Audit vendor training and training aids; advise on adjustments to training objectives.
  • Maintain training center equipment and training aids; interact with maintenance support groups as needed.

Job Title: Senior Maintenance Instructor
Summary

Train new and current foremen, repairmen, service persons, and bus cleaners to ensure workers have the skills to maintain NJ TRANSIT equipment and/or facilities.

Roles And Responsibilities
  • Researches, develops, implements, maintains and reviews maintenance training courses and related items. This includes working with manufacturers and vendors to learn computerized diagnostic software and design and execute technical training for all Maintenance employees.
  • Presents formal maintenance training programs which lead to qualification of bus maintenance personnel repairmen and mechanics.
  • Conducts impromptu garage training as required to ensure proficiency in areas including but not limited to electric and hybrid propulsions, aftertreatment, air brakes, multiplex systems, storage batteries and HVAC.
  • Assimilates new technology, including online training and manufacturer‑provided web‑based training, to course offerings.
  • Audits vendor training to ensure quality and acquires training aids.
  • Appraises and provides counsel for complex technical troubleshooting. Validates training objectives. Audits training result and makes suggestions to Maintenance Training management for adjustments as necessary.
  • Performs upkeep maintenance on training center equipment and training aids.
  • Interacts with maintenance support groups as required to assist with maintenance procedures implementation.
  • Must be self‑motivated and team orientated.
This Position Supervises
  • Maintenance employees during training
Education, Experience and Qualifications
  • High school diploma, or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of additional formal technical training (two (2) years of relevant experience may be substituted in lieu of technical training), plus at least five (5) years applicable experience in a DIESEL POWERED vehicle maintenance program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification
  • Two (2) years in an instructional capacity is desired
Essential Knowledge and Skills
  • A complete understanding of 12 and 24 volt electrical circuitry.
  • Ability to comprehend fully electric and hybrid propulsions, storage batteries, and HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge of electronic controls including engines, transmissions, body controls, ABS and HVAC systems.
  • Proficiency in heavy‑duty diesel engines, transmissions, HVAC, air brake systems, multiplex systems, hydraulics, aftertreatment, and pneumatics required.
Additional Preferred Skills
  • Knowledge of computer based diagnostic software and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite software is desired.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • CDL A, license desirable.
  • ASE certification desirable
Working Environment
  • Classroom, workshop, live garage.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Have physical fitness and stamina to stoop, crawl, work laying down, climb stairs, work in confined areas.
