Role Overview

We are seeking a seasoned Senior Mainframe Developer with a strong foundation in COBOL-based application development, mainframe automation, and system-level optimization. This role blends classic mainframe programming skills with modern DevOps approaches, performance tuning, and integration work to support mission-critical enterprise systems. Candidates with a hybrid skill set across development, infrastructure awareness, and scripting will thrive in this position.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, DB2, VSAM, and CICS
• Work in collaboration with DevOps and Mainframe System Engineering teams to implement automation and optimize CI/CD pipelines
• Leverage tools like Endevor, Changeman, and Xpeditor for version control and debugging
• Utilize mainframe utilities such as File-AID, Abend-AID, and REXX/CLIST scripts to streamline tasks and automate recurring functions
• Conduct impact analysis, gather business and system requirements, and translate them into technical specifications
• Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve application and system-level issues efficiently
• Optimize performance across batch and online processing environments
• Participate in code reviews and enforce coding standards and best practices
• Collaborate with business analysts, QA, architects, and infrastructure teams to ensure robust system performance
• Assist in migrating or integrating mainframe workloads with modern/cloud-native platforms and APIs
• Support production deployments, incident resolution, and ongoing maintenance tasks
• Create and maintain technical documentation for application components and integration logic
• Familiarity with Cisco environments or processes is a plus
  
  

Required Skills & Experience

• 8+ years of hands-on mainframe application development experience
• Strong expertise in COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, VSAM
• Experience working with DevOps automation tools in a mainframe context (e.g., pipelines, release automation)
• Proficiency in tools such as Endevor, Changeman, File-AID, Xpeditor, Abend-AID
• Scripting knowledge in REXX, CLIST, or similar languages
• Strong understanding of z/VSE, VTAM, and mainframe networking concepts is a plus
• Experience working with performance monitoring and tuning at both application and infrastructure levels
• Exposure to mainframe modernization, hybrid integration (e.g., via middleware like EntireX), or API-driven systems is preferred
