Job summary

Impact Narrative Media is seeking an editor who can hold a 6,000-word feature in their head and guide writers with reasons for paragraph movement. The work centers on reported longform, op-eds under principal bylines, and project work like annual publications and policy reports.

The role is hands-on: you will commission writers, edit substantively, shepherd fact-check and legal where needed, and place pieces in outlets as part of the engagement.

Qualifications

• Eight-plus years editing at a magazine, newsroom, or serious nonfiction publisher.
• Ability to take a draft from messy to publishable without rewriting it.
• Network of working writers you have already commissioned at least twice.
• Comfort working with non-journalist principals on op-eds and bylined pieces.
• Strong sense of what is and is not a story.

Responsibilities

• Commission writers for assignments.
• Edit substantively and shepherd fact-check and legal review when needed.
• Place pieces in outlets as part of the engagement.
• Write pieces under your own bylines several times a year.
• Work on fewer pieces, more deeply, than the industry average.
