Job summary

The role focuses on Excess and Surplus lines, high-value claims, and liaising with counsel and vendors.

The position emphasizes reserve setting, detailed communication with insureds and attorneys, and proactive management of litigated files, while supporting mentoring and cross-department projects.

Qualifications

• Minimum of fifteen years of experience in insurance claims.
• Excess and Surplus lines background preferred.
• Construction defect experience beneficial.
• Mandatory Commercial General Liability experience.
• Preferred CPCU, AIC, AEI or other insurance-related credentials.
• High School Diploma mandatory.
• State-required certifications.

Responsibilities

• Review and set up new loss assignments in a timely manner in compliance with department guidelines and best practices.
• Establish appropriate initial loss and expense reserves and continually evaluate the file for adequacy, accuracy and adherence to reserving guidelines.
• Analyze and interpret policy language with specific loss facts to reach appropriate coverage decisions.
• Draft frequent and complex coverage correspondence, including reservation of rights and coverage-disclaimers in compliance with state statutes and regulations.
• Compose detailed correspondence to insureds, claimants, attorneys, agents and regulatory agencies.
• Proactively manage primarily litigated claim files from inception to closure, addressing coverage, liability and damage issues; determine and execute an appropriate plan of action, ensuring prompt and economical resolution in compliance with guidelines.
• Document all claim file activity clearly, including current strategy, plan of action and exit plan.
• Demonstrate comprehensive coverage analysis, investigation, evaluation and negotiation skills at an advanced level.
• Direct and control outside vendor activities and costs, including defense counsel, coverage counsel, experts and independent adjusters.
• Present and discuss loss facts and issues in round-table discussions with peers and management at all levels.
• Transmit regular Large Loss Reports and other detailed reporting documents in a timely manner.
• Manage and monitor file caseload using available resources.
• Maintain required state adjuster licenses and comply with mandatory continuing education.
• Serve as a technical resource within the department through mentoring, knowledge sharing and presentations.
• Provide job function overview and specific subject-matter training to interns and others as needed.
• Participate in projects and initiatives led by other departments or W. R. Berkley companies, such as audits, workshops, focus groups and task forces.
• Initiate appropriate communication with management and other departments.
• Attend seminars and training events, providing feedback to peers and management.
