Job summary

Black & Veatch is seeking a Senior Counsel — Litigation & Disputes to lead and manage complex litigation and disputes across its global operations. The ideal candidate will have 5 years of legal experience with commercial and/or construction disputes and will advise on major arbitration forums.

The role requires coordinating with project management, commercial, and risk teams to mitigate legal risks and supervise outside counsel for cost efficiency.

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school and admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• 5 years of relevant legal experience, with a focus on commercial and/or construction litigation and disputes.
• Experience with major arbitration forums (e.g., ICC, LCIA, AAA/ICDR) and dispute boards is desirable.
• In-depth knowledge of contract law and dispute resolution practices.
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex legal matters and work effectively with senior executives, project teams, and external counsel.

Responsibilities

• Represent the company in managing litigation, arbitration, mediation, and other dispute resolution matters, both domestically and internationally.
• Serve as the key legal advisor on construction-related disputes, including claims for delay, liquidated damages, disruption, defective work, change orders, contractual notice issues, erosion prevention, and cost overruns.
• Oversee and manage outside counsel in complex litigation and arbitration matters to ensure alignment with business objectives and cost efficiency.
• Work closely with project management, commercial, and risk teams to proactively identify and mitigate legal risks on projects.
• Support pre-dispute strategy and negotiations, including drafting of settlement agreements, waivers, and dispute resolution clauses.
• Participate in internal investigations and respond to regulatory or governmental inquiries as needed.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop and deliver training on legal and risk issues related to construction projects.
• Monitor developments in relevant laws and regulations and communicate impacts to the business.
