Job summary

Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a Senior Linux Systems Engineer to modernize infrastructure, automate orchestration, and scale large compute environments in support of high-performance computing and advanced research.

You will architect hybrid platforms bridging bare-metal Linux with Kubernetes/OpenShift, automate provisioning and config, and drive robust engineering practices across an expanding enterprise footprint.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (CS preferred) or 5+ years real-world technical experience.
• 5+ years Linux enterprise administration (RHEL).
• Experience deploying workloads with Kubernetes/OpenShift/Docker/Podman.
• Automation pipelines using Ansible, Puppet, and shell scripting.
• Ability to obtain interim Secret clearance; U.S. citizenship required.
• Willingness to obtain final Secret clearance and work in classified environments.

Responsibilities

• Architect Next-Gen Hybrid Platforms: design, deploy, and scale environments bridging bare-metal Linux with Kubernetes/OpenShift.
• Relentlessly Automate (IaC): automate provisioning, configuration, and compliance across large fleets.
• Hunt Down Tough Bottlenecks: diagnose kernel, network, storage, and container runtime issues end-to-end.
• Power High-Performance Computing: optimize HPC compute clusters for data-intensive workloads.
• Deliver Full-Spectrum Observability: implement telemetry, logging, and security monitoring across estates.
