Job summary

DMI is seeking a Senior Linux/Unix Systems Engineer to support the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, DC. This hands-on role will own design, build, and modernization of the FTC Linux platform, including RHEL and Oracle Linux, automation, security hardening, and high-availability planning.

You will mentor administrators, develop automation pipelines, and coordinate with government stakeholders on architecture and change control.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, or a related technical field, and 8+ years of progressive Linux/Unix administration and engineering experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years at a senior/lead/principal level with design and architecture ownership for an enterprise Linux environment.
  • Senior-level RHEL administration and engineering; working knowledge of Oracle Linux.
  • Experience designing and implementing enterprise automation and configuration management (Ansible, Red Hat Satellite, or comparable tooling).
  • Experience planning and executing major operating system version migrations or platform modernization efforts.
  • Solid understanding of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, VPN).
  • Experience with virtualization (VMware, Hyper-V).
  • Bash/Python scripting for automation and troubleshooting.
  • Version control with Git for infrastructure artifacts.
  • Cloud familiarity (AWS or Azure) and on-prem to cloud migration approaches.
  • Knowledge of CIS/STIG hardening and federal compliance (FISMA, NIST SP 800-53).
  • Ability to complete technical projects independently with strong organizational skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Own engineering and architecture decisions for the FTC RHEL and Oracle Linux estate, including server builds and platform standards.
  • Design and maintain patch and configuration management architecture (Red Hat Satellite, Ansible) and automate workflows.
  • Lead OS lifecycle migrations and cloud migration planning with risk assessment and rollback design.
  • Develop and maintain security hardening baselines; manage vulnerability remediation and compliance evidence.
  • Provide incident escalation support and perform root cause analyses with corrective actions.
  • Mentor administrators and review scripts, configurations, and changes; document designs and SOPs.
  • Install, configure, and maintain Linux servers; monitor performance, backups, and security baselines.
  • Collaborate across teams and communicate technical recommendations to stakeholders.
