Job summary

Securian Financial Group in Minnesota seeks a Life Underwriting Sr. Consultant to evaluate life insurance applications, assess risk, and classify cases with high accuracy.

You will partner with brokers, internal teams, and reinsurers on complex large cases while upholding profitability and fair outcomes. In this senior role, you’ll mentor staff, drive process improvements, and ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of 7 years of life underwriting experience.
• Demonstrated expertise in substandard underwriting.
• Demonstrated expertise in large case underwriting.
• Underwriting knowledge across medical and financial risk assessment.
• Strong decision-making skills with the ability to act independently in real time.
• Proven ability to analyze complex cases and apply sound judgment.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to document rationale clearly and consistently.
• Proficiency in financial underwriting, including business cases.
• Understanding of reinsurance principles and when to engage partners.
• Results-oriented with a focus on quality and productivity.
• Agile mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and innovation.

Responsibilities

• Risk assessment and decisioning within authority by analyzing medical, financial, and lifestyle risk.
• Identify potential fraud and ensure underwriting guideline compliance.
• Make timely and accurate decisions balancing risk, competitiveness, and customer experience.
• Recommend decisions with clear rationale for complex cases.
• Case management to efficiently assess risk and meet productivity/quality expectations.
• Collaborate with reinsurers for rated and large cases.
• Build and maintain relationships with brokers, advisors, and internal partners.
• Communicate underwriting decisions clearly and empathetically to foster trust.
