Job summary

Western & Southern Financial Group seeks an experienced Senior Underwriter to evaluate life insurance applications, determine risk classifications, and approve cases within authority. The role requires strong medical terminology knowledge, negotiation skills to communicate adverse decisions to producers, and adherence to regulatory requirements.

You will review complex cases, train junior underwriters, collaborate with field sales, and ensure confidentiality while maintaining high productivity

Qualifications

• 5 years experience as a life insurance underwriter.
• 1 year experience as a Nurse Practitioner or equivalent position.
• Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology.
• Strong negotiation skills to explain adverse decisions clearly.
• Proven analytical skills with problem solving ability.
• Excellent verbal and written communication.

Responsibilities

• Review life applications, policy changes, and reinstatements for completeness and accuracy.
• Evaluate medical, financial, and non-medical information to classify risk.
• Determine appropriateness of coverage based on financial justification and insurable interest.
• Make underwriting decisions that align with mortality expectations.
• Review and approve cases handled by less tenured underwriters.
• Comply with federal/state rules (MIB, FCRA, blood testing, etc.).
• Communicate accurately in writing and verbally to field force and partners.
• Train new underwriters on processes and philosophy.
• Provide direction to New Business staff and underwriters.
• Lead the team periodically and manage workflow.
• Prepare procedures and formal reports for department projects.
• Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Perform other duties and ensure policy compliance.
