Job Description Summary
Organizational Summary Statement:

The mission of the College of Arts and Humanities (ARHU) is to prepare versatile and visionary leaders equipped to address the complexities of the human experience, both globally and locally. Housed within ARHU, the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures seeks to investigate and engage with the linguistic, cultural, cinematic, and literary worlds of speakers of Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, as well as questions surrounding language learning itself. Its fourteen units are organized into three larger departments (East Asian Languages and Cultures; French and Italian; Spanish and Portuguese) and seven programs (Arabic; Cinema and Media Studies; German Studies; Hebrew; Persian; Russian; and Second Language Acquisition); two Centers (the Center for East Asian Studies; the Roshan Institute for Persian Studies); the Language House Living-Learning Program, and the Summer Institute for Arabic, Korean, and Persian. The University of Maryland College Park foreign language program ranks in Top 20 Foreign Language Schools in the United States and The Best Foreign Language School in Maryland. Approximately 1,000 BA/minor/graduate students and 100 faculty, TAs, and staff are engaged in this broad range of inquiry, individuals who themselves represent languages and cultures from across the globe. Through the school’s diverse ensemble of activity, our faculty and staff are united in our commitment to preparing students, undergraduate and graduate alike, to become knowledgeable, active, critically flexible, and intellectually vibrant citizens in an increasingly interconnected world and to furthering knowledge and debate about the languages, literatures, and cultures of which it is made.


We seek candidates whose research, teaching, and service have prepared them to contribute to diversity and inclusion. Applicants are asked to summarize their leadership efforts, and past or potential contributions to diversity in their Statement of Contributions to Diversity. Contributions might include leadership in teaching, mentoring, research or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment and/or increasing access or participation of individuals from historically underrepresented groups



Duties:

Teach courses within the Department and ensure that the structure and content of the courses taught are consistent with their definitions in the current Undergraduate or Graduate Catalog. Abide by all the University's teaching policies and guidelines regarding faculty responsibilities especially with respect to course syllabi, academic integrity, confidentiality of student records, examinations and grading, copyright compliance, ownership and use of copyrighted materials, ordering books and other similar matters.


Follow the University's calendar published in the Schedule of Classes for starting and ending dates; final examinations; hold all scheduled classes; hold office hours and student conferences and provide the University with timely grades as required for official final grade reporting. Follow department guidelines for student evaluation of teaching and provide the Chair or their designee with those evaluations.


Additional duties include: Serve as academic program advisor to Arabic majors and minors; Coordinate with the Language Partner and Language House programs to facilitate Arabic students' participation in both; Actively recruit students to the major and minor and promote the program on campus; Contribute to the ongoing revision and development of Arabic- language courses and curricula; Advise students preparing for proficiency exams to qualify them for competitive fellowships.


Courses to teach include, but are not limited to: Elementary Arabic II; Intermediate Modern Standard Arabic II; Roots and Patterns, Verb Meaning in Arabic; Arabic for Daily Life II; Special Topics in Arabic Studies, Moroccan Society and Culture.



Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Master’s degree or foreign equivalent in Language, Translation, Arabic, or a closely related field.


Experience:

Exemplary teaching record over the course of at least five years of full-time instruction or its equivalent as a Lecturer (or similar appointment at another institution)


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Exhibit promise in developing additional skills in the areas of research, service, mentoring, or program development.
Employer will accept any suitable combination of education, training and/or experience.
