About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior or Lead CA Gen Engineer to join an established team of 15–20 engineers on a large-scale mainframe modernization initiative.
This role is ideal for a technical specialist with deep hands-on expertise in CA Gen (Broadcom Gen, COOL:Gen) and COBOL who can analyze complex legacy applications, reverse-engineer existing business logic, and translate that knowledge into detailed technical specifications for modern replacement systems.
You will play a critical role in helping the organization reduce its dependency on CA Gen and mainframe technology while ensuring that existing business rules, application behavior, and system dependencies are accurately understood and preserved throughout the modernization process.
This is a fully remote opportunity with no on-call support responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- CA Gen Analysis: Analyze existing CA Gen models, runtime frameworks, and generated COBOL code to understand legacy application logic, functionality, and behavior.
- Technical Specification Development: Translate legacy CA Gen applications into detailed technical specifications to guide the development of replacement systems.
- Reverse Engineering: Identify and document business rules, application workflows, data flows, dependencies, and edge cases within existing systems.
- Modernization & Migration: Collaborate with engineers and architects to develop and validate approaches for transitioning away from CA Gen and mainframe technology.
- Application Design Alignment: Partner with architects and developers to ensure legacy system functionality is accurately represented in the design of modern replacement applications.
- Risk Identification: Identify gaps, technical risks, and potential inconsistencies in legacy models and code before migration.
- Documentation & Knowledge Transfer: Document legacy architecture and system behavior while sharing CA Gen and COBOL expertise with the broader engineering team.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with CA Gen, including Broadcom Gen and/or COOL:Gen.
- 5+ years of COBOL development experience.
- Strong understanding of CA Gen-generated COBOL code, including the ability to analyze and interpret application behavior.
- Deep familiarity with CA Gen models, model internals, and runtime frameworks.
- Proven experience supporting mainframe application modernization or legacy system migration initiatives.
- Ability to reverse-engineer complex legacy applications and translate business logic into clear, detailed technical specifications.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering and architecture teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with CICS, Db2, VSAM, or IMS DB.
- Familiarity with Java or C#/.NET application development.
- Exposure to AWS or cloud-based application environments.
What Makes This Opportunity Stand Out
- 100% remote: Work remotely with an established engineering team.
- Meaningful modernization work: Contribute to a large-scale initiative focused on replacing legacy CA Gen and mainframe applications.
- Technical impact: Apply specialized CA Gen and COBOL expertise to help shape the future architecture of critical business applications.
- Collaborative environment: Work alongside a team of 15–20 engineers, architects, and developers.
- No on-call support: Focus on engineering and modernization without on-call responsibilities.
Both Senior and Lead-level candidates will be considered.
