Overview

The Urban Design Division is responsible for crafting and executing a beautiful, human-scale, and inclusive vision for the design of the built environment across Boston. We champion the transformative power of beautiful, sustainable, walkable communities for everyone that support social, mental, and physical health while improving resiliency and promoting equity.

Summary of Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Deputy Director for Design Review and the Assistant Deputy Director (ADD) of Public Realm Design, the Sr. Landscape Architect I will conduct design reviews and solve complex landscape architectural and urban design problems, focusing on the public realm and climate change issues. They will be a key member of project review teams, facilitating communication and providing clear feedback aligned with city goals and policies. The role involves contributing to planning, design, resilience, affordability, and equity initiatives, and advancing city programs on climate adaptation and urban forestry.

The Sr. Landscape Architect I will collaborate with urban design staff and other city departments, communicate design issues, and contribute to projects involving analysis, conceptualization, and urban design scenarios. They will also mentor other staff and ensure projects align with the city’s design vision and planning goals.

Responsibilities

  • Design Review: Lead reviews of development projects, analyze documents, understand project context, and ensure compliance with design vision and planning goals.
  • Climate and Resilience: Address climate change and sea-level rise considerations, identify resilience measures, and coordinate with relevant departments.
  • Public Improvement Plans: Review and evaluate plans for compatibility with design priorities and coordinate with other departments and commissions.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Support liaison roles with various city departments and community groups, and communicate design feedback professionally.
  • Analysis and Scenarios: Prepare design analyses, site studies, and alternative scenarios for projects of all scales.

Urban Design and Planning:

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, engage in planning processes, and develop conceptual ideas and scenarios.
  • Create drawings, models, and graphics reflecting city goals and community priorities.
  • Develop guidelines, feasibility studies, and impact analyses for various scales, from parcels to citywide planning.
  • Work with city departments on design issues and urban planning projects.

General Duties:

  • Advise senior staff on sensitive project issues.
  • Represent the department at public and interagency meetings.
  • Provide public information and conduct tours as needed.
  • Assist in developing RFPs and selecting consultants.
  • Prepare project status reports.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in landscape architecture or related field with 10+ years of experience, or a bachelor’s degree with 14+ years of experience.
  • Massachusetts Landscape Architecture License required.
  • Ability to solve complex landscape and urban design problems, interpret drawings, communicate effectively, and work on multiple projects.
  • Experience with climate resilience and urban design projects is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Rhino, SketchUp, Adobe Suite, Bluebeam, and familiarity with ArcGIS Pro is a plus.
